Synopsis:

When one door closes, another opens, or so the saying goes.

After being in a long-term relationship for eight years, Audrey Fox never thought she’d tie the knot. But at the age of forty-two, fate throws her a lifeline and she finally has it all – a loving husband, successful career, beautiful family and loyal friends. Life couldn’t be better for Audrey … until a family member entrusts her with a secret that threatens trouble in paradise.

Lying to her new husband definitely wasn’t on the cards when Audrey took her vows, but now she feels there’s no other choice. She either keeps the secret or risks hurting the people that she loves. And then just when the dust seems to settle, an old flame turns up and creates a storm that could bring her world crashing down …

Unable to discuss her dilemma with her significant friends Louise and Tina, or sister-in-law Vicky, the cracks begin to show. Torn between her husband and the people she’s known and loved for years, Audrey’s perfect life begins to spiral out of control. Where do her loyalties lie and whom can she trust? Because there’s no smoke without fire and everyone has secrets … don’t they?

Review:

Unexpected, twisty, and clever!

Her Secret is an enticing tale that takes us into the life of Audrey Fox, a newlywed who’s happy, carefree marriage is about to take an unexpected turn when promises are made, secrets are kept, and lies are told.

The prose is smooth and intense. The characters are complex, secretive, witty, and loyal. And the well-crafted, multi-layered plot quickly unravels and intertwines to create a suspenseful, dramatic story about life, loss, love, marriage, family, romance, deception, manipulation, desperation, and obsession.

I have to admit that when I started Her Secret I didn’t realize it was a sequel and even though I found it to be a gripping, emotive read that kept me guessing from the very first page I would highly recommend you read No Way Back first to truly appreciate and enjoy the creative storyline and exceptional character development.

Songs of Innocence by Anne Coates
@Anne_Coates1 @LoveBooksGroup

Synopsis:

“Gripping and original, Anne Coates delivers the most thrilling Hannah Weybridge investigation yet” – Hugh Fraser, bestselling author of the Rina Walker thriller series

A woman’s body is found in a lake. Is it a sad case of suicide or something more sinister? Hannah Weybridge, still reeling from her friend’s horrific murder and the attempts on her own life, doesn’t want to get involved, but reluctantly agrees to look into the matter for the family.

The past however still stalks her steps, and a hidden danger accompanies her every move.

The third in the bestselling Hannah Weybridge thriller series, Songs of Innocence provides Hannah with her toughest and deadliest assignment yet…

————–

And now:

Choosing a Title by Anne Coates

There’s often a wonderful sense of freedom and excitement that comes with selecting titles but if the author is considering a series there may be some constraints. For my Hannah Weybridge thrillers published by Urbane, I wanted titles to encapsulate the story in a creative and perhaps off-beat way.

Dancers in the Windis a reference to a verse in Dryden’s poem “Fortune”:

I can enjoy her while she’s kind;

But when she dances in the wind,

And shakes her wings, and will not stay,

I puff the prostitute away.”

One of the central characters is a prostitute and several are killed during the narrative, so that verse seemed pertinent to me. “Dances” is changed to “Dancers” and my title was created.

For the sequel, which begins with the murder of Hannah’s close friend, I worked on various connotations. I tried out various combinations of words from Death and Dispossession to Ambassadors for the Dead. Some 12 titles competed for the crown.

I was eventually inspired by Andrew Marvell’s poem, “In Mourning” – in particular the last verse:

I yet my silent judgement keep,

Disputing not what they believe:

But sure as oft as Women Weep

It is to be suppos’d they grieve.”

The words “silent judgement” resonated with me, leading to title number 13 – Death’s Silent Judgementwhich was published in May 2017.

Before deciding on these I made sure there were no other books with the same title by searching for books on Amazon and other websites. It’s amazing how often authors (or publishers) come up with the same title and confusion can arise sometimes with one author benefiting from the popularity of another.

For my third Hannah Weybridge thriller, I was stumped for a title. There are various facets of the narrative that I’d have liked to include but they didn’t necessarily sit well together.  I wanted to continue the poetic essence of the previous titles so again I turned to my favourite poets for inspiration.

For book three I was also looking for some local inspiration. On a wall of a house by the children’s playground is a mural depicting William Blake’s visionof angels in an oak tree in Peckham Park. Peckham Pond is where the first body is discovered… You can see where this is leading. I found my well-thumbed edition of Blake’s poetry and read until I found this verse in “On Another’s Sorrow”:

Can I seen another’s woe,

And not be in sorrow too?

Can I see another’s grief,

And not seek for kind relief?”

For me this summed up Hannah’s feelings and motivation when she is asked by the family of the drowned girl to investigate her death. Hannah is still in shock from her friend’s brutal murder a few months before and the repercussions in her own life. Her own grief made her more receptive to the family’s plea to her to help prove that it wasn’t suicide but murder. Of all the permutations for titles I came up with, Matthew Smith, the publishing Director at Urbane Publications, preferred Songs of Innocence.

When Matthew Smith of Urbane Publications asked me for the title of the next Hannah Weybridge thriller to be published next year, I had to confess I didn’t have one. So it’s currently Hannah Weybridge 4 and I’m back to reading poetry.

About the Author:

Reading and writing has been Anne Coates’ passion for as long as she can remember. Instilled and inspired by her mother and by the Deputy Head at her secondary school who encouraged her hunger for reading by granting her free access to the books not yet in the school library, and she feels still grateful for this, in her eyes, amazing privilege.

After her degree in English and French, Anne moved to London to stay. During her career she worked for publishers, as a journalist, writer, editor, and translator. The birth of her daughter, Olivia inspired her to write non-fiction books, such as ‘Your Only Child’ (Bloomsbury, 1996), books about applying to and surviving university (NeedtoKnow, 2013), but also short stories, tales with a twist, and stories exploring relationships, published in two collections by Endeavour Press (2015).

The sometimes strange places Anne visited as a journalist often made her think “What if…” And so, investigative journalist Hannah Weybridge was born… The Hannah Weybridge series currently consists of three books, all published by Urbane Publications: ‘Dancers in the Wind’ (2016), ‘Death’s Silent Judgement’ (2017), and ‘Songs of Innocence’ (2018).

Anne Coates lives in London with three demanding cats and enjoys reading, going to the theatre and cinema, wining and dining.

“Mornings like this I can understand the appeal of killer high heels. How they click with command down the sidewalk: Get out of my way, I’m in charge and I’ve got the footwear to prove it.”

At the age of 28, Kat Porter has become the it-girl of British TV Production. Gut, gumption, and artistry have carried her through a dozen impossible scenarios to arrive at her first run as Executive Producer, and now all three muses point to Ian Graham’s star power as the key to Los Angeles and golden statues.

But disaster looms as Ian twists Kat into a chameleon fit for success. Ian’s young daughter is thrown into the spotlight and Kat must face the consequences of her neverending quest for acclaim.

Production Valuestakes a biting but fun look at Hollywood—from the way we interpret female ambition to the influence of the paparazzi on how TV shows and stars fail or succeed.

Review:

Intriguing, scandalous, and emotive!

Production Values is a compelling, character-driven story that takes us into the lives of Kat and Bea as they navigate all the complexities, drama, ups-and-downs and emotions of being best friends, as well as business partners.

The writing style is genuine and witty. The characters are quirky, ambitious, independent, and likable. And the engaging plot told from dual perspectives is a journey filled with hopes, dreams, goals, heartbreak, infidelity, family, romance, success, failure, and all the chaos and mayhem involved in tv and movie making.

Overall, Production Values is an enjoyable, entertaining, pensive read that did an exceptional job of delving into the dynamics of relationships, both old and new, and reminding us just how crazy and fickle fame and fortune can truly be.

Synopsis:

“Fake it till you make it.”

A notion I once considered utterly ridiculous. Until one crazy night with a mysterious man resulted in a social media frenzy that had the entire entertainment industry talking.

Seems a fake marriage was just what my career needed to make Hollywood come knocking.

Convincing him to continue the charade was almost too easy. The chemistry between us made it impossible to keep my hands to myself. But it was all just pretend, right? Love was never in the script.

That is, until he re-wrote it.

13 Reasons You Should Stay:

  1. I’m crazy about you
  2. I make you laugh
  3. You totally dig me

Excerpt:

It was early morning by the time I let myself into the house. I carried my suitcase up the stairs and headed straight for the shower to wash off the travel grime. After slipping on a tank and sleep shorts, I quietly entered his room and leaned against the door, watching as he slept. I wasn’t sure how long I’d been watching when he draped an arm over the side of the bed and beckoned me with a crook of his finger.

“What are you doing all the way over there?” he asked, his voice thick with sleep.

“Admiring you.”

“You look cold. Get your butt over here, and I’ll warm you up.”

I scrambled across the room and tucked myself against the warmth of his body. Oh, how I had missed this. He kissed me a few times and smiled a sleepy smile.

“I’ve missed this.”

“I’ve missed you,” he admitted. I loved how open he was with his feelings. He wasn’t afraid of putting himself out there. If he felt it, he blurted it out.

I slipped my fingers between his and sighed. “My agent thinks there’s a strong chance I’ll be offered the role.”

“I thought that was the whole point of all this,” he reminded me.

“It was. I mean, it still is. Being in L.A. helped me realize how much I’m going to miss you when I’m gone. Whether L.A. or New York, we’ll still be apart.”

God, I couldn’t believe I’d just admitted that. I might as well have handed him my beating heart and then given him the boots to stomp on it.

He gave my hand a squeeze. “I get that, and I feel the same way, but that just proves we need to take advantage of the time we have left—however short it may be. Are you still okay with going away this weekend?”

“I’m more than okay with it. Thank you again for inviting me.”

He kissed me tenderly, tangling his legs with mine as we pulled each other close. His tongue teased the seam of my lips until I welcomed him inside. Bodies pressed together, lips seeking, tongues tasting. I allowed myself to get lost in his unspoken promise. One that told me he’d never hurt me. His kiss reminded me to stop trying to figure out our future and focus on the moment. Moments like these.

Synopsis:

I have the perfect life.
Until the day my husband tragically dies.
Being a single mom and widow was never part of the plan.
When David Calloway enters my life, I have no room for love in my heart.
But he’s determined to do right by me.
Could he be the Wright love?

The Wright Love is the first book in the Wright Love Duet, and Sutton and David’s story will conclude in The Wright One—coming May 29th!

Review:

Charming, tender, and sweetly romantic!

In this latest novel by Linde, The Wright Love, she gives us a deeper, more emotional story featuring the youngest Wright Sibling, Sutton, a young widow and single mother struggling to come to grips with her all-encompassing grief, and the intelligent, successful, David, who’s prepared to wait as long as it takes for the woman of his dreams.

The writing is heartfelt and effortless. The supporting characters are kind, generous, and fun-loving. And the plot is a soul-searching journey filled with familial relationships, support, compassion, honesty, desire, longing, rapport, patience, loss, life, and love, as well as a twist you won’t see coming and an ending that will undoubtedly leave you eager for more.

The Wright Love is without a doubt a captivating, heartwarming, beautiful start to Sutton and David’s love story that has left me patiently, or not so patiently waiting for the release of The Wright One, publishing May 29, 2018, to discover whether the secrets and lies of the past will destroy them forever or whether their love will conquer all odds and give them the happy-ever-after ending they deserve.

Synopsis:

Luke O’Reilly has seen it all, done it all, and lived through it all. When a career ending injury forces him to retire from the military, he struggles to adapt. Luke was born to be a soldier, not conform to the nine-to-five mediocrity of everyday life. He needs to protect and serve like he needs his next breath.

Angry, with a bitter taste of civilian life, he finds himself searching for purpose in dangerous operatives through the family business that is Brother’s Keeper Security. Working alongside his brothers, protecting them and those they love, gives him satisfaction. But he still wants more – needs more – and struggles to find it. That is, until the one thing he didn’t think he was searching for, lands on his doorstep. Literally.

Daisy King lives life on her own terms, just the way she likes it. A free spirit, until she finds herself in the protective clutches of Brother’s Keeper, one frustrating brother in particular. As the key witness to a high-profile murder, the stakes turn dangerous and take an unpredictable twist leaving her once simple life an existence she’ll never reclaim.

In a true tug of war between good and evil, Luke fights to overcome his past, to protect his future. Can Luke and Daisy save each other and find a happily ever after? Or, does murder and mayhem prevail, robbing Daisy of her freedom and sentencing Luke to a life alone?

Review:

Humorous, suspenseful, and romantic!

In this latest novel by St. Klaire, Brother’s Keeper III: Luke, the gregarious O’Reilly gang is back, and this time the scarred, ruggedly handsome Luke may find that defending the sweet, fun-loving Daisy from the ruthless killers hunting her down is easier than protecting his heart from falling in love.

The writing is witty and tight. The characters are intelligent, strong, and resourceful. And the plot is a twisty, engaging mix of greed, corruption, friendship, politics, family, military operations, violence, smoking chemistry, smoldering tension, sexy times, and murder.

Brother’s Keeper III: Luke is the third title in the Brother’s Keeper series, and if you ask me it just keeps getting better and better. It’s steamy, fast-paced, and exciting and has everything you look for in romantic suspense novel and more.

About Stephanie St. Klaire

Stephanie St. Klaire is a Pacific Northwest native currently living in Portland, Oregon with her husband, five children, and two ferocious lap dogs that are used to the finer things in life like sleeping all day. When she isn’t writing, she can usually be found with a plate full of taco’s, a side of bean dip, and probably some gummy bears while being a little bit hippy and a lot bit busy mom’ing and wife’ing.

When she’s not tossing around gritty crime show inspired serial killers and diabolical bad guys, she likes to make people pee their pants a little with a good romcom. Sometimes, her worlds collide, and she writes really funny stuff right before she kills people off on the pages! She loves murder and mayhem as much as a good laugh and HEA! That’s why she’s a die-hard Hallmark junky but loves her gritty crime shows – balance!

Stephanie has always been a story teller, with the gift of “gab”, and a life-long goal to be a writer. Unfortunate circumstances with her health, finally afforded her the time to do so. Irony at its best, she began writing her first novel at an adverse time, to escape her circumstance and explore the stories in her imagination for relief. She is happy to share those stories with her readers, and bring a little fun, entertainment, and of course smexy characters to the pages.

Perfect for fans of Katie Marsh, Amanda Prowse and Sheila O’Flanagan

Review:

Heartwrenching, touching, and undeniably affecting!

The Things We Need to Say is an absorbing, character-driven novel that highlights the emotional, physical and mental strain infertility and the loss of a child can have on a marriage.

The writing is vivid and eloquent. The characters are raw, consumed, traumatized, and real. And the plot told from dual perspectives is a beautifully written tale about life, loss, heartache, infidelity, friendship, yoga, introspection, and second-chance love.

Overall I would have to say that The Things We Need to Say is an immersive, warm, thought-provoking novel that reminds us just how important trust, communication, honesty, forgiveness, and love are to the success of a relationship and thus ultimately our own happiness.

But who’s rubbing who up the wrong way?

Review:

Genuine, humorous, and a little mysterious!

In this latest novella, The Weekend Spa Break, we check back in on the gang of online friends we were introduced to in The Big Event and head out on an exquisite getaway with authors Constance and Estelle as they unwind, relax, and get to know each other a little better.

The writing is descriptive and smooth. The characters are supportive, fun-loving, and likable. And the plot is a lovely blend of developing friendships, budding romance, a handsome masseuse, decadent spa treatments, scrumptious food, and a surprising, unexpected twist.

Overall, The Weekend Spa Break is a lighthearted, easy read about life, love, friendship, and family, and I look forward to reading the third novella in the series to find out what these lovers of social media get themselves mixed up in next.

Synopsis:

Violet Vasquez never met her biological father, so learning he left his beloved hockey franchise—the Chicago Rebels—to her is, well, unexpected. Flat broke and close to homeless, Violet is determined to make the most of this sudden opportunity. Except dear old dad set conditions that require she takes part in actually running the team with the half-sisters she barely knows. Working with these two strangers and overseeing a band of hockey-playing lugs is not on her agenda…until she lays eyes on the Rebels captain and knows she has to have him.

Bren St. James has been labeled a lot of things: the Puck Prince, Lord of the Ice, Hell’s Highlander…but it’s the latest tag that’s making headlines: washed-up alcoholic has-been. This season, getting his life back on track and winning the Cup are his only goals. With no time for relationships—except the fractured ones he needs to rebuild with his beautiful daughters—he’s finding it increasingly hard to ignore sexy, all-up-in-his-beard Violet Vasquez. And when he finds himself in need of a nanny just as the playoffs are starting, he’s faced with a temptation he could so easily get hooked on.

For two lost souls, there’s more on the line than just making the best of a bad situation… there might also be a shot at the biggest prize of all: love.

Review:

Sweet, romantic, and satisfying!

Hooked on You is a fervent, bittersweet tale that brings together the broody, guilt-ridden Bren, and the feisty, fun-loving Violet as they both discover that some things are worth fighting for and together they can overcome any baggage from their pasts.

The prose is emotive and smooth. The characters are hesitant, dependable, and affable. And the plot is an alluring mix of compassion, patience, attraction, friendship, addiction, parenthood, familial drama, hockey, combustible chemistry and unconditional love.

Hooked on You is the fourth and final novel in the Chicago Rebels series. It’s a little rueful to say goodbye to the characters we’ve come to love but is nevertheless a lovely way to catch up on the whole gang and finally give Violet and Bren the happy-ever-after ending we’ve imagined for them from the very start.

About Kate Meader

Originally from Ireland, Kate Meader cut her romance reader teeth on Maeve Binchy and Jilly Cooper novels, with some Harlequins thrown in for variety. Give her tales about brooding mill owners, oversexed equestrians, and men who can rock an apron, a fire hose, or a hockey stick, and she's there. Now based in Chicago, she writes sexy contemporary romance with alpha heroes and strong heroines (and heroes) who can match their men quip for quip.
