In this high concept psychological suspense novel from the USA Today bestselling author of Somebody’s Daughter, a chance meeting with a woman in an airport sends a man on a
pulse-pounding quest for the truth…

Joshua Fields takes the same flights every week for work. His life is a series of departures and arrivals, hotels and airports. During yet another layover, Joshua meets Morgan, a beautiful stranger with whom he feels an immediate connection. When it’s time for their flights, Morgan gets up to leave, leans over and passionately kisses Joshua, lamenting that they’ll never see each other again.

As Morgan slips away, Joshua is left feeling confused by what just happened between them. That’s when he looks up and is shocked to see Morgan’s face flashing on a nearby TV screen. He’s even more shocked when he learns the reason why–Morgan is a missing person.

What follows is a whirlwind, fast-paced journey filled with lies, deceit, and secrets to discover the truth about why Morgan is on the run. But when he finally thinks every mystery is solved, another rears its head, and Joshua’s worst enemy may be his own assumptions about those around him…

Review:

Crafty, complex, and unpredictable!

Layover is a character-driven whodunit featuring the reckless and determined Joshua Fields as he throws caution to the wind and leaves his ordinary life behind to do whatever it takes to find the missing, enigmatic Morgan Reynolds who seems to have vanished into thin air after sweeping him off his feet in a bar at the Atlanta airport.

The writing is crisp and clear. The characters are impulsive, irrational, and troubled. And the plot told from two different perspectives is a menacing tale of life, love, obsession, deception, familial dynamics, desperation, violence, and murder.

I have to admit this was a really tough one for me, as even though there is no doubt that Bell can write a creative, mysterious story that some readers will absolutely love, unfortunately for me the plot was a bit too unrealistic, and the characters were a little too hard to connect to for me to enjoy Layover as much as I would have liked.

A man waits at London Airport for Ingrid Ostermann, the love of his life, to arrive. Across the Atlantic, a retired NYPD cop waits in a bar in Florida’s Key West for his first date with the lady who is, without question, his soulmate. The two men are about to discover they’ve been scammed out of almost every penny they have—and that neither woman exists.

Meanwhile, a wealthy divorcée plunges, in suspicious circumstances, from an apartment block in Munich. In the same week, Detective Superintendent Roy Grace is called to investigate the suicide of a woman in Brighton, that is clearly not what it seems. As his investigations continue, a handsome Brighton motivational speaker comes forward. He’d discovered his identity is being used to scam 11 different women, online.

Roy Grace realizes he is looking at the tip of an iceberg. A global empire built on clever, cruel internet scams and the murder of anyone who threatens to expose them.

Review:

Dark, devious, and pacey!

Dead at First Sight is a sharp, compelling, police procedural that immerses you into the gritty, disturbing underworld of cybercrime, specifically online dating, and highlights just how easy it is to prey on humanity’s insatiable need to love and be loved.

The writing is complex and intense. The characters are a mix of ruthless, vulnerable, and tenacious. And the plot is a suspenseful tale full of twists, turns, action, duplicity, manipulation, intrigue, power, greed, violence, and murder.

Overall, Dead at First Sight is another timely, insightful, action-packed tale by James that highlights just how exposed the internet actually makes us and how easy and quickly it is for those with nefarious tendencies to commit crimes and destroy lives worldwide.

Dead at First Sight is the fifteenth novel in the Roy Grace series and even though there are some references to cases and events from the previous books, it can certainly be read as a standalone if desired.

A woman is found dead in a London street – the evidence suggests she plummeted to her death from a nearby tower block – but did she fall or was she pushed? And why does she have Danny Bird’s name written on the back of her hand?

So begins this 4th magnificent outing for Danny and the gang from The Marq.

In the frame for a murder he didn’t commit, London’s self-proclaimed Sherlock Homo has no choice but to don his metaphorical deerstalker one more time to prove his innocence and uncover the truth about the tragic death of Cathy Byrne.

With the indomitably louche Lady Caz by his side, Danny plunges headlong into a complex investigation while at the same time trying to be a dutiful son to his increasingly secretive parents, and still find the time to juggle his frustratingly moribund love-life.

Review:

Clever, menacing, and darkly comedic!

Death of an Angel is a twisty, complex, mischievous tale that takes you into the life of pub manager, amateur sleuth extraordinaire, Danny Bird as he dreadingly gets mixed up in another case involving a suicide victim with his name on her hand, a husband with a fondness for state-of-the-art cars, and a gang of hoodlums with a penchant for money, machetes, and hounds.

The prose is witty and tight. The characterization is spot on with a whole slew of characters who are eccentric, gregarious, and sharp-witted. And the plot, including all the subplots, unravel and intertwine into an irresistible tale of deception, manipulation, greed, jealousy, corruption, mayhem, oddball mishaps, slapstick moments, violence, and murder.

Overall, Death of an Angel is so much better than I ever expected and surprising brilliant in every way. It’s an intricate, fresh, edgy mystery that not only kept me guessing and amused until the very last page but had me purchasing the first three paperbacks in the series as quickly as possible.

Beth Murphy is on the run…

For nearly a year, Beth has been planning for this day. A day some people might call any other Wednesday, but Beth prefers to see it as her new beginning–one with a new look, new name and new city. Beth has given her plan significant thought because one small slip and her violent husband will find her.

Sabine Hardison is missing…

A couple of hundred miles away, Jeffrey returns home from a work trip to find his wife, Sabine, is missing. Wherever she is, she’s taken almost nothing with her. Her abandoned car is the only evidence the police have, and all signs point to foul play.

As the police search for leads, the case becomes more and more convoluted. Sabine’s carefully laid plans for her future indicate trouble at home and a husband who would be better off with her gone. The detective on the case will stop at nothing to find out what happened and bring this missing woman home. Where is Sabine? And who is Beth? The only thing that’s certain is that someone is lying and the truth won’t stay buried for long.

Review:

Well crafted, menacing, and delightfully unnerving!

Dear Wife is a suspenseful, riveting thrill ride that delves into the emotional and psychological damage caused by domestic abuse and highlights just how easily dominance, manipulation and intimidation can be masked as love.

The writing is tight and intense. The characters are resolute, secretive, and apprehensive. And the plot, told from three different POVs, builds steadily as it twists, turns, and unravels all the behaviours, motivations, relationships, and personalities within it.

Dear Wife is, ultimately, a story of obsession, deception, desperation, survival, violence, and murder. It’s creepy, shocking, unputdownable, and without a doubt one of the best psychological thrillers I’ve read this year.

Review:

Tempestuous, relentless, and tight.

In this latest novel by Miranda, The Last House Guest, she transports us to the small coastal town of Littleport, Maine where secrets and gossip are rampant, class tensions run high, and the reopening of the investigation into the recent death of one of the wealthy seasonal residents will uncover more suspects and more skeletons than anyone could have imagined.

The prose is tense and sharp. The characters are scarred, deceptive, and conflicted. And the plot, using a past/present, back-and-forth style is a suspenseful thrill ride filled with friendship, familial drama, collusion, manipulation, lies, scandals, revelations, and murder.

Overall, The Last House Guest is a dark, twisty, compelling page-turner that delves into the intricate and dynamic bonds between friends and has just the right pace, mood, atmosphere, and surprises to keep you guessing until the very last page.

When both couples begin Harmony’s intensive therapy program, it becomes clear that Harmony is not all it seems—and neither are Miles and Grace themselves. What are they hiding, and what price will these couples pay for finding out?

As a deadly tropical storm descends on the coast, trapping the hosts and the guests on the resort, secrets are revealed, loyalties are tested and not one single person—or their marriage—will remain unchanged by what follows.

Review:

Sinuous, compelling, and timely!

The Last Resort is an ominous, character-driven novel that takes us to the idyllic Harmony Resort where the illustrious marriage counsellors Miles and Grace Markell are once again ready to help another group of struggling couples find their way back to each other. But like most things involving money, power, and privilege everything is not always as it seems, and hidden away behind those polished, flawless exteriors lies an abundance of lies, secrets, adultery, greed, abuse, subjugation, and manipulation.

The prose is tight and intense. The characters are troubled, deceptive, and vulnerable. And the plot, including all the subplots, keep you engrossed from start to finish with a multitude of twists, turns, obsession, deception, jealousy, familial drama, revelations, violence, and murder.

Overall, The Last Resort is an atmospheric, intricately woven, engrossing mystery by Stapley that is highly entertaining and devilishly satisfying.

Fatal Inheritance is an intoxicating story of dysfunctional families and long-hidden secrets, set against the decadence of the Côte d’Azur.

Review:

Picturesque, mysterious, and incredibly captivating!

Fatal Inheritance is an alluring, compelling tale predominantly set in the idyllic French Riviera during 1948 that takes you into the lives of the rich and glamourous Lesters. They are affluent. They are privileged. And like most families with money and power everything is not always as it seems and behind all the fame and fortune hides an abundance of lies, secrets, temptation, scandals, secrets, heartbreak and tragedy.

The prose is polished and lush. The characters are multi-layered, alluring, and materialistic. And the plot is a well-paced, sweeping saga filled with familial drama, love, loss, mystique, heartbreak, romance, rivalry, greed, red herrings and jealousy.

Overall, Fatal Inheritance is a beautifully crafted, exceptionally absorbing novel that transports you to another time and place and immerses you so thoroughly in the decadence, lifestyle, luxuries, and scandalous behaviour of the characters you never want to put it down. It is a true guilty pleasure and undoubtedly one of my favourite novels of the year.

Blanche Potter never expected to face her past again—but she can’t escape it.

Blanche, an up-and-coming filmmaker, has distanced herself in every way she can from her father, the notorious killer and cult leader, Chuck Varner. In 1996, when she was a small child, he went on a shooting spree before turning the gun on himself.

Now, Blanche learns that her mother has been murdered. She returns to her childhood home, where she soon discovers there’s more to the death than police are willing to reveal. The officer who’s handling the case is holding information back, and a journalist who’s nosing around the investigation is taking an unusual interest in Blanche’s family.

Blanche begins to suspect that Chuck Varner’s cult has found a new life, and that her mother’s murder was just the beginning of the cult’s next chapter.

Then another killing occurs.

Review:

Slow burning, dark, and dangerous!

Your Life is Mine is an eerie, enthralling, domestic thriller that delves into the gritty, manipulative world of cults and the disturbing ideology that underlies their radicalism, extremism, and violence.

The prose is sinister and intense. The characters are single-minded, scarred, and conflicted. And the plot told from the first-person point of view, is a menacing tale about power, deception, control, lies, secrets, paranoia, abuse, obsession, jealousy, and murder.

Overall, Your Life is Mine is a twisty, intricate, timely tale by Ripley that highlights the scheming, murky, evil side of human nature and reminds us that sometimes even the most ordinary of people can be persuaded to commit the most heinous of crimes.

What happened to Amanda Holmes?

Twenty years ago, she washed up on shore in a rowboat with a gash to the head after an overnight at Camp Macaw. No one was ever charged with a crime.

Now, the MacAllister children are all grown up. After their parents die suddenly, they return to Camp to read the will and decide what to do with the prime real estate it’s sitting on. Ryan, the oldest, wants to sell. Margo, the family’s center, hasn’t made up her mind. Mary has her own horse farm to run, and believes in leaving well-enough alone. Kate and Liddie—the twins—have opposing views. And Sean Booth, the family groundskeeper, just hopes he still has a home when all is said and done.

But then the will is read and they learn that it’s much more complicated than a simple vote. Until they unravel the mystery of what happened to Amanda, they can’t move forward. Any one of them could have done it, and all of them are hiding key pieces of the puzzle. Will they work together to solve the mystery, or will their suspicions and secrets finally tear the family apart?

Review:

Secretive, pacey, and compulsive!

I’ll Never Tell is a riveting, intricately woven, character-driven whodunit that takes us to the rugged wilderness of Camp Macaw and into the lives of the MacAllister family where tensions are high, fingers are being pointed, and a twenty-year-old tragedy will finally be solved.

The writing is seamless and precise. The characterization is spot on with a cast of characters that are secretive, driven, selfish and flawed. And the plot, told from differing points-of-view, keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish as it whips you through well-timed twists, unforeseen surprises, deception, abuse, guilt, jealousy, violence, and murder.

Once again, I’ll Never Tell has proven that when it comes to writing exceptionally clever, deftly plotted, fast-paced, domestic thrillers with exquisite character development and deliciously sinister storylines McKenzie is definitely one of the best.

Review:

Menacing, twisty, and meticulous!

We Can See You is a highly suspenseful, character-driven, domestic thriller that brings a mother’s worst nightmare to life and explores the terror, chaos, and distress a ruthless kidnapper with forensic savvy and eyes everywhere can wreak.

The writing is taut and sharp. The characters are tenacious, consumed, and multifaceted. And the high-intensity plot quickly unfolds into a tangled web of danger, angst, fear, manipulation, panic, instinct, jealousy, deception, kidnapping, violence, and murder.

Overall, We Can See You is an intricately woven, vengeful, cunning mystery that has a nice sense of urgency, palpable anguish, great pace, and enough twists to keep you guessing until the very last page.
