A missing family. A traumatized detective. The past and present collide in a riveting novel of suspense by the USA Today bestselling author of These Still Black Waters, Do No Harm, Behind Every Lie, and The Night Olivia Fell.

Late Christmas Eve, the Harper family’s car crashed on a desolate stretch outside Black Lake. Sixteen-year-old Alice was found injured by the side of the road―alone. It was as if her parents and younger sister, Ella, had simply disappeared.

One year later, Alice is still dealing with nightmares and unanswered questions when she and her friends find Ella’s bloodstained backpack in the basement of an abandoned home. As Detective Jess Lambert investigates, she uncovers dark secrets that put her on a collision course with her past. Jess’s only witness is haunted by her own ghosts―ghosts that might ultimately be connected to Jess.

Jess will do anything to find out what happened to the Harpers―no matter how deep she has to dig. Because neither the living nor the dead are giving up their secrets easily.

Review:

Sharp, intense, and gripping!

What Lies in Darkness is a well-paced, engrossing police procedural that sees Detective Jess Lambert now tangled up in a complicated case involving a missing family that is a lot more sinister than it first appeared and which may even have a connection to her own devastating tragedy that irrevocably changed her life forever.

The writing is tight and intense. The characters are layered, secretive, and persistent. And the plot, told from multiple perspectives, is an ominous tale full of twists, turns, red herrings, supernatural phenomena, secrets, deception, desperation, deduction, and manipulation.

Overall, What Lies in Darkness is a relentless, eerie, simmering tale by McDonald that keeps you guessing from start to finish and is a wonderful reminder that things are never quite what they seem.

A stranger has infiltrated your family…and now he’s taking over.

Paul’s just here to help, or so he claims—sent by a charity for vulnerable people to do odd jobs for elderly widow Gwen. But for Gwen’s daughter Connie, there’s just something about Paul that rings alarm bells from day one. He’s a little too kind, a little too involved…Worse still, Gwen seems to have fallen under his spell.

The last thing Connie wants is a stranger meddling in the safe routine she’s built around Gwen. She loves being the one Gwen turns to for cooking, cleaning and company. But the more Paul visits, the more Gwen is relying on him. By the time he conveniently finds himself between homes and has no choice but to move in, Connie is certain he’s trying to push her out completely.

It’s her word against his, though, and as her attempts to unmask him become ever more desperate she’s not the only one left wondering if she’s lost her grip on reality. But when events start spiralling rapidly out of her control, should Connie wage all-out war on Paul and risk losing Gwen forever—or has that been his plan all along?

Review:

Ominous, intense, and absorbing!

The Stranger in Her House is an eerily gripping, suspenseful tale that takes you into the life of Connie, a young woman taking care of her elderly, declining mother who, after accepting the help of a local handyman, suddenly finds her life turned upside down when it quickly becomes apparent that his motivations are not as honest and pure as they first appeared and he’ll do whatever it takes, even kill, to get what he wants.

The prose is tight and edgy. The characters are secretive, consumed, and duplicitous. And the plot is a twisty tale full of drama, deception, lies, obsession, manipulation, tragedy, childhood trauma, dark secrets, violence, and murder.

Overall, The Stranger in Her House is another engrossing, sinister, tortuous novel by Marrs that kept me riveted from the very first page and is definitely the perfect choice for anyone who loves a menacing, highly entertaining, tension-filled read.

Review:

Charged, propulsive, and unnerving!

A Killer’s Game is a sinister, action-packed thrill ride featuring the tenacious, skilled former Army Ranger turned FBI special agent Daniela Vega as she gets mixed up in an investigation into the toxic poisoning of a senator’s aid that quickly spirals into something a lot more lethal involving an online video game, an underground facility, numerous deadly challenges and puzzles, twelve men who are willing to do anything they need to in order to be the last man standing, and a “Nemesis” who’s been waiting a long time to exact revenge.

The writing is taut and intense. The characters are meticulous, tormented, and persistent. And the plot is a suspenseful, engrossing thriller full of twists, turns, lies, deception, revelations, obsession, danger, depravity, vengeance, violence, and murder.

Overall, A Killer’s Game is an eerie, tortuous, fast-paced tale by Maldonado that’s a promising start to this new Daniela Vega series with its multilayered characters, intricate storyline, consistent sense of urgency, and satisfying conclusion.

Review:

Dark, spine-chilling, and intricately plotted!

Keep It in the Family is an unsettling, compelling, psychological thriller that delves into all the deep, dark secrets people keep even from those closest to them and highlights just how easily the most heinous of evil can often live comfortably amongst us merely hidden behind masks of normality.

The writing is sharp and crisp. The characters are secretive, cunning, and vulnerable. And the plot, told from multiple perspectives, including that of the serial killer, builds quickly creating intensity and suspense as it unravels all the relationships, motivations, personalities, deception, and devious behaviours within it.

Keep It in the Family is, ultimately, a story of lies, deception, revelations, familial drama, depravity, suspicious personalities, manipulation, violence, and murder. It’s a clever, tight, disturbing thrill ride that had just the right amount of twists, turns, and surprises to keep me thoroughly engrossed from start to finish. It’s also surprisingly the first novel I’ve read by Marrs, but I can guarantee it won’t be my last.

A missing persons case gone cold. Until Kate Marshall sees it from a terrifying new angle.

Kate Marshall’s fledgling PI agency takes off when she and her partner, Tristan Harper, are hired for their first big case. It’s a cold one. Twelve years before, journalist Joanna Duncan disappeared after exposing a political scandal. Most people have moved on. Joanna’s mother refuses to let go.

When Kate and Tristan gain access to the original case files, they revisit the same suspects and follow the same leads―but not to the same dead ends. Among Joanna’s personal effects, Kate discovers the names of two young men who also vanished without a trace.

As she connects the last days of three missing persons, Kate realizes that Joanna may have been onto something far more sinister than anyone first believed: the identity of a serial killer hiding in plain sight. The closer Kate comes to finding him, the darker it’s going to get.

Review:

Relentless, unpredictable, and sinister!

In this latest novel in the Kate Marshall series, Darkness Falls, Bryndza has written another complex, ominous thriller featuring former police detective turned PI Kate Marshall and her loyal partner Tristan Harper as they work together on their first big assignment involving the thirteen-year-old cold case of a missing journalist who at the time of her disappearance was embroiled in the investigation and exposition of a local married MP with a penchant for young men.

The writing is crisp and tight. The characters are astute, diligent, and multi-layered. And the intricate plot keeps you engrossed from start to finish with its twists, turns, deception, revelations, corruption, power, red herrings, violence, and murder.

I have to say this series just keeps getting better and better. Darkness Falls is an intricately woven, perfectly paced, highly entertaining whodunit that has all the elements I look for in a thrilling mystery, complete with a riveting storyline, exceptional character development, and an ending that left me eager for more.

From the bestselling author of One Small Sacrifice comes a suspenseful thriller about a dead woman who predicted her own murder—and the sister who won’t let the truth be buried.

When her beloved sister Caroline dies suddenly, Deirdre is heartbroken. However, her sorrow turns to bone-chilling confusion when she receives a message Caroline sent days earlier warning that her death would be no accident. Long used to being a pariah to her family, Deirdre covers her tattoos and heads to Manhattan for her sister’s funeral.

The message claimed Caroline’s husband, Theo, killed his first wife and got away with it. Reeling from the news, Deirdre confronts Theo on the way to the cemetery, and he reveals both his temper and his suspicion that Deirdre’s “perfect” sister was having an affair.

Paranoid and armed with just enough information to make her dangerous, Deirdre digs into the disturbing secrets buried with Caroline. But as she gets closer to the truth, she realizes that her own life may be at risk…and that there may be more than one killer in the family.

Review:

Sinister, twisty, and simmering!

Her Last Breath is a gripping, sophisticated, domestic thriller that delves into the dynamic and intricate bonds between family members and reminds us that everything is not always as it seems and behind all those smiling, happy faces often hides an abundance of secrets, lies, and swirling emotions.

The writing is menacing and tight. The characters are complex, secretive, and troubled. And the plot told from alternating perspectives is ominous and intense as it subtly twists, turns, and unravels all the personalities, motivations, actions, and relationships within it.

Her Last Breath, at its core, is a novel about deception, familial strife, marital discord, manipulation, jealousy, obsession, justice, and murder. It’s menacing, intense, creepy, and overall, in my opinion, a satisfying whodunit.

Retiring prosecutor Jessica Yardley can’t turn down one last investigation. This time, it’s a set of murders inspired by a series of grisly paintings called The Night Things. She’s the only one who can catch the killer, who’s left a trail of bodies in a rural community outside of Las Vegas.

But the more Jessica finds out, the less clear her case becomes. Out of options, she’s forced to consult her serial killer ex-husband—to gain additional insight into the crimes and the killer’s motivations.

By the time Jessica realizes that pursuing this case is a deadly mistake, it’s too late to turn back. Can she catch the killer, or will she be the final addition to a killer’s masterpiece?

Review:

Gripping, illusive, and dark!

In this engrossing sequel, Crimson Lake Road, Methos has written another ominous, unpredictable thriller featuring Assistant U.S. Attorney, Jessica Yardley and FBI Special Agent, Cason Baldwin as they work together to solve a case involving two women drugged, posed, and left in an isolated cabin to die, a missing teenage girl, and a serial killer who seems to have an unusual fascination for a series of four paintings depicting victims who have been tortured, posed, and in some cases eviscerated and a horrifying fixation on bringing art to life.

The prose is crisp and tight. The characters are multilayered, flawed, and troubled. And the plot is a disturbing tale of intrigue, surprises, red herrings, deception, abuse, revenge, violence, suspicious motivations, and murder.

Overall, Crimson Lake Road is another fast-paced, tortuous, sophisticated tale by Methos that kept me guessing from the very first page and left me chilled, satisfied, and curious to see what his devious mind will come up with next.

Review:

Engrossing, propulsive, and twisty!

In this enthralling second instalment in the Rachel Marin series, A Stranger at the Door, Pinter has written a menacing thrill ride featuring the resilient Rachel Marin and the dependable Detectives Serrano and Tally as they join forces to hunt a sadistic killer who seems to have ties to a group of local high school boys and a wealthy entrepreneur.

Action-Packed, engaging, and suspenseful!

The writing is sharp and crisp. The characters are secretive, persistent and ruthless. And the plot keeps you on the edge of your seat with its short, intense chapters that submerge you into a menacing tale full of twists, turns, deception, corruption, mayhem, danger, revelations, power, violence, and murder.

Overall, The Girl Beneath the Sea is a tortuous, intricate, pacey mystery that’s a wonderful start to this new series by Mayne with its well-drawn characterization, nice sense of urgency, and thrilling conclusion.
