St. Petersburg, 1725. Peter the Great lies dying in his magnificent Winter Palace. The weakness and treachery of his only son has driven his father to an appalling act of cruelty and left the empire without an heir. Russia risks falling into chaos. Into the void steps the woman who has been by his side for decades: his second wife, Catherine Alexeyevna, as ambitious, ruthless and passionate as Peter himself.

Born into devastating poverty, Catherine used her extraordinary beauty and shrewd intelligence to ingratiate herself with Peter’s powerful generals, finally seducing the Tsar himself. But even amongst the splendor and opulence of her new life—the lavish feasts, glittering jewels, and candle-lit hours in Peter’s bedchamber—she knows the peril of her position. Peter’s attentions are fickle and his rages powerful; his first wife is condemned to a prison cell, her lover impaled alive in Red Square. And now Catherine faces the ultimate test: can she keep the Tsar’s death a secret as she plays a lethal game to destroy her enemies and take the Crown for herself?

From the sensuous pleasures of a decadent aristocracy, to the incense-filled rites of the Orthodox Church and the terror of Peter’s torture chambers, the intoxicating and dangerous world of Imperial Russia is brought to vivid life. Tsarina is the story of one remarkable woman whose bid for power would transform the Russian Empire.”

Review:

Fascinating, insightful, and engaging!

Tsarina is an intriguing interpretation of the rags-to-riches, extraordinary life of Marta Helena Skowrońska (Catherine I of Russia), who started life as the illegitimate child of a peasant and was subsequently sold into slavery, widowed, and sexually violated before becoming the mistress of Peter the Great, and later his wife and successor to the Russian throne, holding the title of Empress of Russia until her untimely death in 1727.

The prose is vivid and rich. The characters are bold, remorseless, and well-drawn. And the plot is an absorbing, sweeping saga of all the hopes, fears, sacrifices, struggles, treachery and entangled relationships found in one of the most powerful families to ever rule the Russian Empire.

Tsarina is, ultimately, a story about life, loss, love, politics, power, war, corruption, greed, riches, fervour, desires, sacrifice, savagery, violence, and murder. It’s a perceptive, alluring, compelling tale by Alpsten that does a beautiful job of highlighting her impressive research and considerable knowledge into the infamous Romanov family, especially those who reigned in the late seventeenth, early eighteenth century and their undeniable influence on Russian history.

United by tragedy, can two broken souls make each other whole?

After the tragic loss of his wife, Helen, Luke Hansard is desperate to keep her memory alive. In an effort to stay close to her, he reaches out to an online friend Helen often mentioned: a reclusive photographer with a curious interest in beautiful but broken objects. But first he must find her—and she doesn’t want to be found.

Orla Kendrick lives alone in the ruins of a remote Suffolk castle, hiding from the haunting past that has left her physically and emotionally scarred. In her fortress, she can keep a safe distance from prying eyes, surrounded by her broken treasures and insulated from the world outside.

When Luke tracks Orla down, he is determined to help her in the way Helen wanted to: by encouraging her out of her isolation and back into the world. But Orla has never seen her refuge as a prison and, when painful secrets and dangerous threats begin to resurface, Luke’s good deed is turned on its head.

As they work through their grief for Helen in very different ways, will these two broken souls be able to heal?

Review:

Heartbreaking, hopeful, and absorbing!

The Beauty of Broken Things is a moving, sensitive tale set in the idyllic Suffolk countryside that takes us into the lives of Orla Kendrick and Luke Hansard, two strangers whose budding friendship helps them learn how to support, heal, grow, take chances, start anew, and grieve the tragedies they’ve each endured.

The prose is emotive and smooth. The characters are vulnerable, scarred, and compassionate. And the plot is a captivating tale full of love, loss, family, tragedy, courage, community, contentment, anxiety, and unconditional friendship.

Overall, The Beauty of Broken Things is a pensive, tender, evocative tale by Connelly that reminds us that life can be unpredictable and full of curveballs, but it’s how we approach, handle and survive all these messy, complicated, highs-and-lows that truly make all the difference.

Esther’s life isn’t perfect (whose is?) – but she’s happy enough living in her little flat with her boyfriend, Josh.

But that’s about to change.

Bored out of her mind in work, she wishes that something, anything, would happen to liven her life up.

Unfortunately, her wish comes true when Josh calls her from the airport to tell her he’s going to work in a bar in Spain, and she’s not invited, Esther is devastated, and her unhappiness is compounded when she discovers she can actually view the bar via a webcam link and watch him chatting up other girls.

But when she inadvertently clicks on a link to another webcam which shows a pretty cottage and the rather hunky man who lives in it, her interest is piqued and she wishes she could get to know him.

Wishes don’t really come true, though – do they…?

Review:

Sweet, heartwarming, and delightfully charming!

The Cottage on Wildflower Lane is a lighthearted, uplifting tale that takes you into the life of the lovely, heartbroken Esther who after being bamboozled by her boyfriend Josh spends her days going on some uninspiring internet dates, mooning over her ex, scanning online webcams, starting a new job, and lusting over a handsome stranger.

The writing is fluid and crisp. The characters are charismatic, genuine, and endearing. And the plot is an amusing tale full of life, love, heartbreak, friendship, palpable chemistry, humorous moments, witty banter, and dreamy romance.

Overall, The Cottage on Wildflower Lane is a warm, comical, engaging tale by Davies that will make you chuckle, smile, and potentially swoon.

Working for a department store where Christmas arrives in August, Eve prefers her own festivities to be low key with nothing more complicated than an oven-ready turkey and frozen peas while she spends the day in her pyjamas. Unfortunately, this year her husband has invited his best friend to visit, the glamorous and sophisticated Abby, and Eve reluctantly decides that she needs to inject a little sparkle into their laid back and slightly shabby Christmas. So the celebrations are upgraded to include champagne and canapes along with homemade gravy and organic turkey and plans are made for a Christmas that looks as though it has emerged from the pages of a glossy magazine.

But even the best-laid plans can go wrong and as Eve struggles with her mini Yorkshire puddings and an interfering cat, she is suddenly faced with an unexpected guest and an explosive secret that threatens to put her vision of a perfect Christmas in jeopardy.

Review:

Sweet, dramatic, and festive!

Eve’s Christmas is a charming, angsty tale that takes you into the life of the hardworking, creative Eve who after striving to impress her husband’s best friend and create the perfect Christmas quickly discovers there’s no such thing as perfect when all her well thought out plans are upended when jealousy rears its ugly head, long-hidden secrets are unearthed, and an uninvited guest turns up.

The writing is warm and light. The characters are kind, determined, and genuine. And the plot is an entertaining mix of family, friendship, life, love, manipulation, miscommunication, excessiveness, and the unfortunate environmental consequences of the holidays.

Overall, Eve’s Christmas is a cosy, heartfelt, witty story by Butterfield that reminds us that we often lose perspective of the true meaning of Christmas and that being surrounded by family, friends, and those we love is more important than any beautifully wrapped gift we may find under the tree.

About Julie Butterfield

Julie Butterfield belongs to the rather large group of 'always wanted to write' authors who finally found the time to sit down and put pen to paper - or rather fingers to keyboard.
She wrote her first book purely for pleasure and was very surprised to discover that so many people enjoyed the story and wanted more, so she decided to carry on writing.
It has to be pointed out that her first novel, 'Did I Mention I Won The Lottery' is a complete work of fiction and she did not, in fact, receive millions in her bank account and forget to mention it to her husband - even though he still asks her every day if she has anything to tell him!

Review:

Encouraging, warm, and emotive!

Snowflakes over Moondance Cottage is an amusing, tender tale that takes us to the town of Lower Luckworth and into the life of the kindhearted, lonely Jess Thornton as she juggles a demanding sister, a mother who seems lost, a handsome contractor, and a life without the father she loves dearly.

The writing is heartfelt and light. The characters are grieving, flawed, genuine, and sentimental. And the plot is a delightful blend of humour, heart, family, friendship, attraction, chemistry, support, misunderstandings, secrets, tender moments, and magical surprises.

Overall, Snowflakes over Moondance Cottage is an amusing, uplifting, festive tale by Green that is an adorable mix of sweet romance, family drama, and holiday cheer.

About Rosie Green

Rosie has been scribbling stories ever since she was little.

Back then, they were rip-roaring adventure tales with a young heroine in perilous danger of falling off a cliff or being tied up by 'the baddies'.

Thankfully, Rosie has moved on somewhat, and now much prefers to write romantic comedies that melt your heart and make you smile, with really not much perilous danger involved at all - unless you count the heroine losing her heart in love.

Rosie's brand new series of novellas is centred around life in a village cafe. The latest, 'Bonfires & Hot Chocolate at the Little Duck Pond Cafe', is out now.

Watch out for 'A Winter Wedding at the Little Duck Pond Cafe', which will be published Christmas 2019.

Rosie is also writing a full-length, standalone book for Christmas 2019, entitled 'Snowflakes over Moondance Cottage'.

Book Rating: 7/10

The Wicked Lord’s Mistress is set in the late Victorian period (1886) for fans of upstairs/downstairs dramas such as Downton Abbey and steamy romances. It explores the continuing love story between Lily, a lady’s maid at Torrington Hall, and a handsome, mysterious aristocratic hero called Lord Edgar Wilson.

Lily is surrounded by challenges from all sides. She is being blackmailed by the evil Mallkins, she has a secret past that she is trying to hide, and her forbidden love affair with Lord Wilson grows more risky every day. Can their lusty affair transform into the tender and lasting love that Lily craves? And given the differences in their class, is a happy ending possible for them?

Then a new enemy comes into Lily’s life, someone who is determined to destroy her. Lily finds herself facing the greatest challenge of her life, and hopes that Lord Wilson will be her hero.

Review:

Rousing, mischievous, and suspenseful!

The Wicked Lord’s Mistress is a spirited, regency romance that transports you back to the late 1880s where Lily, a troubled, passionate Lady’s Maid who after surviving the untimely death of her parents and the man she loved is determined to do whatever it takes to protect her young son, escape the hands of a master manipulator, and keep her heart far away from the roguish Lord Wilson.

The prose is amusing and light. The characters are sultry, troubled, and secretive. And the plot is a mysterious tale full of scoundrel behaviour, family drama, desire, yearning, control, manipulation, class stratification, and steamy romance.

Overall, The Wicked Lord’s Mistress is an easy, enjoyable, quick read by Jameson that is entertaining and a little naughty. It’s the second novel in The Lord’s Seduction series and even though it can be enjoyed as a standalone story, I would highly recommend reading The Wicked Lord and the Lady’s Maid first.

Ella wishes Gill would propose. But since Mia’s wedding something’s changed in their relationship. Now he’s spending time with newcomer, Tabbie Talbaine, Ella wishes Tabbie will leave as quickly as she arrived.

Tabbie wishes she hadn’t driven her car into a pond. But it could be the best thing that’s ever happened to her. When she discovers Hollywood heartthrob, Justin Lake’s staying in the village, getting an interview for her popular blog isn’t her only wish.

Bree was told she couldn’t have a baby. Now she’s expecting twins and is simply wishing it all goes well.

And as for Hettie … she wishes she could get her hands on an old map of the village. Because there’s something hidden in Little Pondale that Hettie Turner really wants to find.

Review:

Warm, delightful, and satisfying!

Secret Wishes and Summer Kisses on Lily Pond Lane is a sweet, feel-good romance that is pure escapism with its quaint village, gregarious villagers, tender moments, hilarious hijinks, and touch of magic.

The prose is smooth and light. The characters are friendly, welcoming, and easygoing. And the plot sweeps you away and immerses you in a fanciful tale full of friendship, family, community, hopes, dreams, love, blossoming romance, and wishes.

Secret Wishes and Summer Kisses on Lily Pond Lane is the last story in this wonderful series by Harvale. And even though it is bittersweet to say goodbye to the lovely gang we’ve come to know and love over the last eight novels it has been an absolute pleasure to be able to indulge in all the mystique, adventure, mishaps, and love that’s gone on in Little Pondale over the entire series.
