From the bestselling author of P.S., I Love You, a fiercely feminist story collection that illuminates–sometimes in fantastical ways–how women of all kinds navigate the world today.

In this singular and imaginative story collection, Cecelia Ahern explores the endless ways in which women blaze through adversity with wit, resourcefulness, and compassion. Ahern takes the familiar aspects of women’s lives–the routines, the embarrassments, the desires–and elevates these moments to the outlandish and hilarious with her astute blend of magical realism and social insight.

One woman is tortured by sinister bite marks that appear on her skin; another is swallowed up by the floor during a mortifying presentation; yet another resolves to return and exchange her boring husband at the store where she originally acquired him. The women at the center of this curious universe learn that their reality is shaped not only by how others perceive them, but also how they perceive the power within themselves.

By turns sly, whimsical, and affecting, these thirty short stories are a dynamic examination of what it means to be a woman in this very moment. Like women themselves, each story can stand alone; yet together, they have a combined power to shift consciousness, inspire others, and create a multi-voiced ROAR that will not be ignored.

Review:

Astute, thought-provoking, and empowering!

Roar is a sharp, creative collection of short stories that highlight all the responsibilities, expectations, and discriminations that society places on women, as well as the self-reproach, pressure, and need for validation we as women place on ourselves.

The writing is witty and sharp. The stories are imaginative, well written and impactful. And the plots, although slightly different, all have a similar theme and character, “the woman”, who is always in need of a good roar.

Overall, Roar is a novel all women should read. It’s a humorous, relevant, contemplative, perceptive anthology that reminds us that as women we need to believe in ourselves and always remember that we are confident, powerful, intelligent, attractive human beings no matter our size, age, race, or occupation.

Sixteen years after Cecelia Ahern’s bestselling phenomenon PS, I Love You captured the hearts of millions, the long-awaited sequel follows Holly as she helps strangers leave their own messages behind for loved ones.

Seven years after her husband’s death — six since she read his final letter — Holly Kennedy has moved on with her life. When Holly’s sister asks her to tell the story of the “PS, I Love You” letters on her podcast — to revisit the messages Gerry wrote before his death to read after his passing — she does so reluctantly, not wanting to reopen old wounds.

But after the episode airs, people start reaching out to Holly, and they all have one thing in common: they’re terminally ill and want to leave their own missives behind for loved ones. Suddenly, Holly finds herself drawn back into a world she’s worked tirelessly to leave behind — but one that leads her on another incredible, life-affirming journey.

With her trademark blend of romance, humor, and bittersweet life lessons, Postscript is the perfect follow-up to Ahern’s beloved first novel.

Review:

Sensitive, pensive, and emotionally heart wrenching!

In this absorbing sequel in the P.S. I Love You series, Postscript, we head back into the life of Holly Kennedy seven years after the death of her husband Gerry when a guest spot on a podcast inadvertently upheaves her life and causes tears to be shed, lives to be remembered and celebrated, friendships old and new to be savoured, and love to be forged and shared.

The writing is skillful and seamless. The characters are well-drawn, genuine, and kind. And the plot is the perfect blend of hope, heart, humour, drama, and palpable emotion.

Postscript is, ultimately, a story about life, love, heartbreak, grief, friendship, family, and moving on. It’s an immersive, insightful, touching tale that once again showcases Ahern’s incredible, innate ability to delve into all the psychological and emotional entanglements associated with loss and weave them into a story you can’t put down. It will make you laugh, it will make you cry, and it will remind you that life is too short and the words “I Love You” can never be said enough.

A forgotten childhood. A discovered life.
What if you only had one day to find out who you really were?

When Sabrina Boggs stumbles upon a mysterious collection of her father’s possessions, she discovers a truth where she never knew there was a lie. The familiar man she grew up with is suddenly a stranger to her.

An unexpected break in her monotonous daily routine leaves her just one day to unlock the secrets of the man she thought she knew. A day that unearths memories, stories and people she never knew existed. A day that changes her and those around her forever.

The Marble Collector is a thought-provoking novel about how the most ordinary decisions we make can have the most extraordinary consequences for how we live our lives. And how sometimes it’s only by shining on a light on someone else, that you can truly understand yourself.

Review:

I really liked this book.

It was a heartwarming story that engrossed you from the get-go. And like most Cecilia Ahern’s books, it made you laugh, made you cry, and also made you cheer.

It has a wonderful cast of characters. Uses a past/present, back and forth, style to give depth into the father/daughter relationship between Sabrina and Fergus. And ultimately, it showcases the long-lasting effects secrets can have on those we love, and the importance of finding one’s true identity for happiness.

I’m certainly glad I picked it up. It’s definitely worth reading.
