Review:

Amusing, lighthearted, and sexy!

Make Mine a Cowboy is a heartwarming, fun-loving tale that takes you to Meadow Valley, CA and into the life of the compassionate, hardworking Charlotte North as she juggles a grandmother in need of assistance, a rewarding career back in New York, and a cowboy who’s slowly stealing her heart.

The writing is playful and tender. The characters are helpful, supportive, and loveable. And the plot is a delightful blend of heart, humour, family, friendship, introspection, attraction, community spirit, shameless flirting, romantic moments, and steamy chemistry.

Overall, Make Mine a Cowboy is a sweet, entertaining, effortless tale by Pine that’s the second novel in the Meadow Valley series but can certainly be read and enjoyed as a standalone novel.

When her past starts to catch up with her, she’s tempted to keep running, but she’s fallen in love with Blessings and with Duke. Having finally found a place to call home, the only place Cathy wants to run is straight into Duke’s arms.

Review:

Cosy, charming, and engaging!

Once in a Blue Moon is a warm, lighthearted tale that takes you back to Blessings, Georgia and into the lives of Cathy Terry, a young woman on the run from her powerful, dangerous ex who isn’t content to just let her walk away with all his secrets, and the dependable, hardworking rancher, Duke Talbot who’s been too busy taking care of everyone else to find the time to make a family of his own.

The prose is fluid and smooth. The characters are kind, caring, and supportive. And the plot is a feel-good, uplifting tale with a sliver of mystery that’s full of life, love, friendship, community, family, romance, love, and intrigue.

Overall, Once in a Blue Moon is another sweet addition to the Blessings, Georgia series by Sala with its small-town charm, endearing characters, underlying thread of suspense, and reminder of how important it is to find a place to call home.

Starting over is more about who you’re with than where you live…

Julia del Mar Ortiz is not having the best year.

She moved to Dallas with her boyfriend, who ended up ditching her and running back to New York after only a few weeks. Left with a massive—by NYC standards, anyway—apartment and a car lease in the scorching Texas heat, Julia is struggling…except that’s not completely true. Running the charitable foundation of one of the most iconic high fashion department stores in the world is serious #lifegoals.

It’s more than enough to make her want to stick it out down South.

The only monkey wrench in Julia’s plans is the blue-eyed, smart-mouthed consultant the store hired to take them public. Fellow New Yorker Rocco Quinn’s first order of business? Putting Julia’s job on the chopping block.

When Julia is tasked with making sure Rocco sees how valuable the programs she runs are, she’s caught between a rock and a very hard set of abs. Because Rocco Quinn is almost impossible to hate—and even harder to resist.

Review:

Heartfelt, playful, and enticing!

Here to Stay is a heartwarming, humorous tale that transports you to Dallas, Texas and into the lives of both Julia del Mar Ortiz, a kind, compassionate, Dominican-Puerto Rican woman who after being dumped shortly after relocating to Texas from Queens is more than happy putting all her time and effort into her dream job, running the charitable foundation for Sturm’s, and Rocco Quinn, an Italian-Irish, handsome, young man tasked with helping Sturm’s get ready to go public and potentially recommending chopping those parts of the company, such as their charitable foundation, that may be an unnecessary expense to the companies bottom line.

The writing is sensual and light. The characters are intelligent, kind, considerate, inclusive, and endearing. And the plot is a push-pull tale full of workplace drama, familial responsibility, witty banter, tender moments, expectations, goals, friendship, diversity, compromise, chemistry, and love.

Overall, Here to Stay is another sweet, passionate, satisfying novel by Herrera that’s more than just a typical enemies-to-more rom-com with its abundance of culture and tradition, social consciousness, and timely perspective.

In a series debut for fans of Tana French and Kate Atkinson, set in Dublin and New York, homicide detective Maggie D’arcy finally tackles the case that changed the course of her life.

Twenty-three years ago, Maggie D’arcy’s family received a call from the Dublin police. Her cousin Erin has been missing for several days. Maggie herself spent weeks in Ireland, trying to track Erin’s movements, working beside the police. But it was to no avail: no trace of her was ever found.

The experience inspired Maggie to become a cop. Now, back on Long Island, more than 20 years have passed. Maggie is a detective and a divorced mother of a teenager. When the Gardaí call to say that Erin’s scarf has been found and another young woman has gone missing, Maggie returns to Ireland, awakening all the complicated feelings from the first trip. The despair and frustration of not knowing what happened to Erin. Her attraction to Erin’s coworker, now a professor, who never fully explained their relationship. And her determination to solve the case, once and for all.

A lyrical, deeply drawn portrait of a woman – and a country – over two decades – The Mountains Wild introduces a compelling new mystery series from a mesmerizing author.

Review:

Intricate, menacing, and atmospheric!

The Mountains Wild is a sinister, slow-burning mystery that takes you into the life of Long Island homicide detective Maggie D’arcy as she heads back to Wicklow, Ireland where authorities believe they have uncovered a scarf belonging to her cousin who has been missing since 1993, and the time to find the latest victim of this potential serial killer alive is quickly dwindling.

The writing is methodical and vivid. The characters are flawed, driven, and determined. And the plot using a past/present, back-and-forth style is a captivating police procedural full of twists, turns, red herrings, familial drama, secrets, deception, relationship dynamics, malice, violence, and murder.

Overall, The Mountains Wild is an ominous, intriguing, immersive tale by Taylor that is a thoroughly enjoyable read and a fantastic start to this new Maggie D’arcy series.

Experience the “epic tale of one woman’s fight . . . to create the life of her dreams” in this sweeping novel of Anita Garibaldi, a 19th century Brazilian revolutionary who loved as fiercely as she fought for freedom (Adriana Trigiani).

Destiny toys with us all, but Anita Garibaldi is a force to be reckoned with. Forced into marriage at a young age, Anita feels trapped in a union she does not want. But when she meets the leader of the Brazilian resistance, Giuseppe Garibaldi, in 1839, everything changes.

Swept into a passionate affair with the idolized mercenary, Anita’s life is suddenly consumed by the plight to liberate Southern Brazil from Portugal — a struggle that would cost thousands of lives and span almost ten bloody years. Little did she know that this first taste of revolution would lead her to cross oceans, traverse continents, and alter the course of her entire life — and the world.

At once an exhilarating adventure and an unforgettable love story, The Woman in Red is a sweeping, illuminating tale of the feminist icon who became one of the most revered historical figures of South America and Italy.

Review:

Engaging, enlightening, and inspiring!

The Woman in Red is a compelling, adventurous interpretation of the life of Anna “Anita” Garibaldi, a strong-willed, Brazilian woman who after meeting the Italian revolutionary Giuseppe Garibaldi spent the next ten years of her life participating in and supporting his conquests for freedom and a unified Italy until her untimely death at the tender age of 27 from Malaria.

The prose is evocative and expressive. The characters are strong, passionate, determined, and courageous. And the plot, set in Brazil, Uruguay, and Italy during 1839 to 1849 is a fast-paced, fascinating tale about life, love, bravery, strength, loss, loyalty, danger, motivation, heroism, and survival.

I have to admit that I knew very little about Anna Garibaldi when I started The Woman in Red, but Giovinazzo did such a wonderful job of blending historical facts with captivating, alluring fiction that I was not only left entertained but incredibly intrigued to learn more about this exceptionally fearless, iconic woman’s legacy.

It’s not long before their pet-centric arrangement sparks a person-centric desire…

Simon Burke has always preferred animals to people. When the countdown to adopting his own dog is unexpectedly put on hold, Simon turns to the PetShare app to find the fluffy TLC he’s been missing. Meeting a grumpy children’s book illustrator who needs a dog walker isn’t easy for the man whose persistent anxiety has colored his whole life, but Jack Matheson’s menagerie is just what Simon needs.

Four dogs, three cats and counting. Jack’s pack of rescue pets is the only company he needs. But when a bad fall leaves him with a broken leg, Jack is forced to admit he needs help. That the help comes in the form of the most beautiful man he’s ever seen is a complicated, glorious surprise.

Being with Jack—talking, walking, making out—is a game changer for Simon. And Simon’s company certainly…eases the pain of recovery for Jack. But making a real relationship work once Jack’s cast comes off will mean compromise, understanding and lots of love.

Carina Adores is home to highly romantic contemporary love stories where LGBTQ+ characters find their happily-ever-afters.

Review:

Alluring, passionate, and adorably sweet!

Better Than People is a sensitive, touching tale about the kind, aggrieved, talented Jack who is not only struggling psychologically to come to terms with his long-time friend/business partner’s betrayal but also the frustration of being housebound due to a broken leg, as well as the shy, extremely anxious, graphic designer Simon who longs for companionship from someone other than his grandmother and a bunch of four-legged creatures with fur.

The prose is intimate and smooth. The characters are vulnerable, sincere, and endearing. And the plot is a heartfelt tale filled with life, love, family, intimacy, chemistry, heat, desire, romance, light drama, furry friends with lots of personalities, and the struggles of coping with extreme anxiety.

Overall, Better Than People is a heartwarming, emotive, deliciously steamy novel by Parrish about two unique, compassionate men who find the sensitivity, tenderness, solace, and intimacy they need and deserve in each other.

Under the scorching French sun, a tense homecoming unearths a long-buried family secret in this deliciously propulsive beach read of a mother’s greatest fear brought to life.

Elodie was beautiful. Elodie was smart. Elodie was manipulative. Elodie is dead.

When Sylvie Durand receives a letter calling her back to her crumbling family home in the South of France, she knows she has to go. In the middle of a sweltering 1990’s summer marked by unusual fires across the countryside, she returns to La Reverie with her youngest daughter Emma in tow, ignoring the deep sense of dread she feels for this place she’s long tried to forget.

As memories of the events that shattered their family a decade earlier threaten to come to the surface, Sylvie struggles to shield Emma from the truth of what really happened all those years ago. In every corner of the house, Sylvie can’t escape the specter of Elodie, her first child. Elodie, born amid the ’68 Paris riots with one blue eye and one brown, and mysteriously dead by fourteen. Elodie, who reminded the small village of one those Manson girls. Elodie who knew exactly how to get what she wanted. As the fires creep towards the villa, it’s clear to Sylvie that something isn’t quite right at La Reverie . . . And there is a much greater threat closer to home.

Rich in unforgettable characters, The Heatwave alternates between the past and present, grappling with what it means to love and fear a child in equal measure. With the lush landscape and nostalgia of a heady vacation read, Kate Riordan has woven a gripping page-turner with gorgeous prose that turns the idea of a summer novel on its head.

Review:

Gripping, unnerving, and chillingly suspenseful!

The Heatwave is an intense, slow-burning thriller that takes you into the life of Sylvie Durand, a middle-aged, single mum who after a sudden fire at the family estate, La Reverie, in the south of France must finally return home to confront all the memories, secrets, and tragedies that are buried there.

The prose is tight and edgy. The characters are secretive, consumed, and troubled. And the plot, told through an unreliable narrator and using a past/present, back-and-forth style builds and unravels subtly into a tension-filled tale full of unexpected twists, suspicious personalities, familial drama, deception, guilt, violence, manipulation, and the complex, sometimes toxic relationships that can occur between family members.

Overall, The Heatwave is an engrossing, cunning, sinister novel by Riordan that keeps you enthralled from the very first page and is a menacing, highly entertaining, eerily atmospheric read.

A horrific crime that defies ordinary explanation. A rookie FBI agent in dangerous, uncharted territory. An extraordinary hero for the ages. Odessa Hardwicke’s life is derailed when she’s forced to turn her gun on her partner, Walt Leppo, a decorated FBI agent who turns suddenly, inexplicably violent while apprehending a rampaging murderer. The shooting, justified by self-defense, shakes the young FBI agent to her core. Devasted, Odessa is placed on desk leave pending a full investigation. But what most troubles Odessa isn’t the tragedy itself-it’s the shadowy presence she thought she saw fleeing the deceased agent’s body after his death. Questioning her future with the FBI and her sanity, Hardwicke accepts a low-level assignment to clear out the belongings of a retired agent in the New York office. What she finds there will put her on the trail of a mysterious figure named John Silence, a man of enormous means who claims to have been alive for centuries, and who is either an unhinged lunatic, or humanity’s best and only defense against unspeakable evil.

Review:

Dark, creepy, and mystifying!

The Hollow Ones is an intense, supernatural thriller that takes you into the lives of three main characters, Odessa Hardwicke, Earl Solomon, and John Blackwood as their paths connect and intertwine on the hunt for the most unexplainable, wicked souls who have decided to terrorize and rack up body counts in the New York area.

The prose is calculated and gritty. The characters are unique, determined, and mysterious. And the plot, using a past/present, back-and-forth style unravels quickly into a horrifying tale of gruesome violence, senseless murder, immortal beings, a mysterious mailbox, and the shadowy corners of the unknown.

Overall, The Hollow Ones is an intricate, eerie, creative tale by del Toro and Hogan that gets more enigmatic with every page you turn and is definitely a good choice for occult fiction fans everywhere.

In this gripping follow up to “The Boundary Stone,” Lady Catherine Abbott’s life takes an unexpected turn when an abused young woman forces her to examine the privileges of 17th century aristocratic English society, the roles of women, and her own place in the world.

Determined to discover the mysteries of the human body, daring physick, Simon McKensie, fights once more against superstition, ignorance and the vast, unknown boundaries of science when he creates a remarkable experiment that could change the very course of medicine itself.

Set against the sweeping backdrop of both the Great Fire of London and the extraordinary discoveries of the Scientific Revolution, Simon and Catherine together must face the villainous consequences of his fierce, intellectual curiosity and his dangerous thirst for knowledge.

Review:

Multilayered, alluring, and exceptionally atmospheric!

The Skeptical Physick is a rich, informative tale that picks up right where The Boundary Stone left off taking us back to seventeenth-century London and into the lives of Simon and Catherine as they endure one of the most devasting disasters of all time, The Great Fire of London while continuing to also battle those who frown upon, discount, and discourage scientific exploration and medical research.

The prose is eloquent and vivid. The characters are reliable, selfless, and courageous. And the plot is an immersive, fascinating tale of life, loss, love, optimism, bravery, tragedy, devastation, romance, and the procedures and evolution of early medicine.

Overall, The Skeptical Physick is another beautifully written, incredibly enthralling tale by Halverson that grabs you from the very first page and does an exceptional job of blending historical facts with fiction that is both enlightening and wonderfully compelling.

Review:

Poignant, sweet, and undeniably heartwarming!

Family for Beginners is an evocative, captivating tale that delves into the complex bonds and emotional ties between family members and immerses you in a tale about confronting the past, accepting the things you cannot change, following your heart, learning to trust, and embracing the future.

The prose is smooth and polished. The characters are lonely, sorrowful, and conflicted. And the story is an exceptionally absorbing tale about life, loss, love, grief, adultery, acceptance, forgiveness, familial drama, friendship, teenage angst, loneliness, communication, contentment and romance.

Overall, Family for Beginners is a beautiful mix of heart, happiness, and hope. And it’s no secret that Sarah Mogan is one of my favourite authors, and once again with this moving, emotive, affecting tale she didn’t disappoint.
