Author: Genevieve Graham

Published by: Simon & Schuster Canada on April 2, 2019

Genres: Historical Fiction

Pages: 368

Format: Paperback, ARC

Source: Simon & Schuster Canada

Book Rating: 8.5/10

Synopsis:

From bestselling author Genevieve Graham comes a sweeping new historical novel of love, tragedy, and redemption set during the height of the Klondike Gold Rush.

In 1897, the discovery of gold in the desolate reaches of the Yukon has the world abuzz with excitement, and thousands of prospectors swarm to the north seeking riches the likes of which have never been seen before.

For Liza Peterson and her family, the gold rush is a chance for them to make a fortune by moving their general store business from Vancouver to Dawson City, the only established town in the Yukon. For Constable Ben Turner, a recent recruit of the North-West Mounted Police, upholding the law in a place overrun with guns, liquor, prostitutes, and thieves is an opportunity to escape a dark past and become the man of integrity he has always wanted to be. But the long, difficult journey over icy mountain passes and whitewater rapids is much more treacherous than Liza or Ben imagined, and neither is completely prepared for the forbidding north.

As Liza’s family nears the mountain’s peak, a catastrophe strikes with fatal consequences, and not even the NWMP can help. Alone and desperate, Liza finally reaches Dawson City, only to find herself in a different kind of peril. Meanwhile, Ben, wracked with guilt over the accident on the trail, sees the chance to make things right. But just as love begins to grow, new dangers arise, threatening to separate the couple forever.

Inspired by history as rich as the Klondike’s gold, At the Mountain’s Edge is an epic tale of romance and adventure about two people who must let go of the past not only to be together but also to survive.

Review:

Informative, fascinating, and emotive!

At the Mountain’s Edge is an engaging tale set in Northern Canada during the Klondike Gold Rush of the late 1800s when the prospect of fame and immeasurable wealth had thousands navigating the treacherous Chilkoot Pass in hopes of reaching the prosperous and bustling Dawson City.

The prose is evocative and fluid. The characters are scarred, driven, and resilient. And the compelling, well-paced plot is an adventurous journey filled with familial drama, heartbreak, loss, love, courage, self-discovery, hope, solace, romance, and survival that is told from two perspectives. Liza, a resourceful, hardworking young woman struggling to persevere in a city continually ravaged by nature and predominantly populated by men, and Ben, a North-West Mounted Police constable whose loyal, kind, and helpful, but continuously plagued by a troubled and violent past.

Overall, At the Mountain’s Edge is an atmospheric, absorbing, well-written novel by Graham that showcases her incredible knowledge and passion for Canadian history and highlights the indomitable spirit of humanity to survive, endure, conquer, and love in even the harshest environments and situations.

Synopsis:

A spy on a mission…Until he meets this heiress!

Miss Theodora Cranford’s learned to keep her impetuous nature locked away. She won’t be deceived by another man who can’t see past her fortune. She wants an honourable, sensible sort – not a self-assured scoundrel like her new neighbour, Lord Gray. Although she’s sure there’s more to him than meets the eye… But after that first captivating kiss, she’s certainly left wanting more!

Review:

Romantic, rousing, and entertaining!

The Disgraceful Lord Gray is set in the Suffolk countryside during 1820 and features the feisty, willful Theodora Cranford who may unexpectedly find herself in need of a hero, as well as the dashing, yet jaded Lord Gray who may finally have found the right woman to give his heart to.

The prose is witty and authentic. The characters are warm, passionate, and mischievous, including the lovable, four-legged, incorrigible Trefor. And the plot is an amusing, mysterious mix of Regency lifestyle, scoundrel behaviour, family drama, attraction, humorous antics, espionage, mishaps, danger, and romance.

Overall, The Disgraceful Lord Gray is a lighthearted, engaging, delightful read that’s perfect for anyone who loves historical romance with a side of adventure. And even though it’s the third book in The King’s Elite series, it can certainly be read and enjoyed as a standalone novel.

About Virginia Heath

When Virginia Heath was a little girl it took her ages to fall asleep, so she made up stories in her head to help pass the time while she was staring at the ceiling. As she got older, the stories became more complicated, sometimes taking weeks to get to the happy ending. Then one day, she decided to embrace the insomnia and start writing them down. Fortunately, the lovely people at Harlequin Mills & Boon took pity on her and decided to publish her romances, but it still takes her forever to fall asleep.

Series: Hills of Texas #3

Published by: Tule Publishing on March 21, 2019

Genres: Contemporary Romance

Pages: 207

Synopsis:

One daring kiss with the playboy tempts the good girl, but can she tame him?

Autry Hill may be a cowboy to his boots, but he’s also gained quite the reputation as a charmer and playboy. His parents aren’t sure he’s ready to take the reins of the family’s prosperous Texas ranch, so they set up a challenge: No women or scandal for the next six months and the ranch house he grew up in is his. Easy peasy, Autry thinks. He’s already tired of late nights and romancing, until elementary school teacher Beth Cooper happens to cross his path. Suddenly Autry is losing his heart, his mind, and what’s left of his reputation.

Good girl teacher Beth Cooper is far too practical to fall for Autry Hill, even if she had a crush on him way back when. The man’s been breaking hearts since middle school. But when he becomes her unexpected champion and then they work together to help one of Beth’s troubled students who’s about to lose everything, she sees a different side of Autry – serious, compassionate, determined and dedicated. And that Autry is nearly impossible to resist. Does she need to?

EXCERPT:

“I see,” he said without thinking. Then shook his head, having trouble focusing. All he could think about was the fact that Beth Cooper—the most prim and proper schoolmarm in town, an angel as far as most of the people in town were concerned—was hitting on him.

He ran his gaze over petite features and creamy skin, perfect even under the dim parking lot lights. Her pale blonde hair was ruffled in a way that gave her a little-girl-lost vibe he had to admit he was sort of into.

Autry’s body stirred in a reaction that neither Stella nor any other woman in that bar had engendered. Except Beth was off-limits and he had a bet to win. “Beth… I’m flattered that you’re interested—”

Her eyebrows scrunched down over those amazing eyes. “Oh, my God. I’m nothitting on you.”

He ignored the protest. She was getting shut down after all, of course pride would make her protest. “It’s definitely the most creative approach I’ve seen. If you’d asked me a few weeks ago, I would have taken you up on whatever it is you’re offering.”

Hands plonked down on slim hips. “Autry Aaron Hill, you’d be the last person I’d be interested in.”

“Oh, really?” He cocked his head, his customary flirtatious grin slipping into place with practiced ease. “You’ve never wondered even a tiny bit?”

Because he sure as hell had.

Her pink lips parted in a gasp. “Of course not. Listen, if you’ll just give me my purse, then we can both get going.”

Autry crossed his arms, a spark of mischief prompting him to not let that go. She might have been in the “off-limits” box but he’d also caught glances. If most any other woman had looked at him with that mix of curiosity and need, he would’ve walked over and whispered something naughty in her ear before dragging her off for fun. But Beth was too innocent, too much of a good girl to try those kinds of moves with her.

“I tell you what, Elizabeth Ann Cooper…” He deliberately mimicked her use of full name. “I will give you your purse back on one condition.”

Narrowed eyes greeted his statement. “What condition?”

Just when she thought she had everything, there’s a very real chance she might lose the only thing she truly wants.

Review:

Quaint, cozy, and mysterious!

Return to Lily Pond Lane is a beguiling, heartwarming tale that takes us back once again to the village of Little Pondale and into the lives of all the characters we’ve come to know and love over the previous five novels as they now have to bond together to overcome loss, tragedy, and unexpected illnesses.

The writing is smooth and effortless. The characters are kind, supportive, and fun-loving. And the plot is a charming, at times heartbreaking mix of family, friendship, adversity, heartache, touching moments, and small-town living.

Overall, Return to Lily Pond Lane is another wonderful addition to the fantastic Little Pond Lane series that’s not only a quick, easy, delightful read but one I highly recommend.

Never give up on your dreams, no matter how long you hold on to them . . .

Gracie Burton is a grandmother, living quietly in Devon. She has rarely left the village over the past forty years. Her daughter, Carina, is immensely high-powered with her own fast-paced business in London. She has very little time for her 17-year-old daughter, Anastasia, away at boarding school, and even less time for her aging mother. In many ways, the three of them barely know each other. Then Gracie stumbles upon an advertisement for a weeklong cookery course in the heart of the Tuscan countryside. She cannot resist and ploughs her life savings into the trip. Carina and Anastasia accompany her. They have no idea why Gracie has been drawn to this venture. They have no sense of her past; she has never spoken about it. They have no idea that Gracie is harbouring the secret of an extraordinary life that preceded them . . .

Review:

Steamy, emotional, and alluring!

In this second novel in the Game Changers series, Heated Rivalry, Reid gives us a sweet and spicy, enemies-to-more romance that highlights the struggles and hardships of falling in love with someone of the same sex when you’re a professional athlete.

The prose is tender and titillating. The characters are bold, driven, and charming. And the plot is a sultry, push-pull tale full of sexual innuendoes, red-hot chemistry, flirty banter, familial drama, friendship, competition, support, acceptance, love and hockey.

Overall, Heated Rivalry is a smoldering, tantalizing novel that reminds us that sometimes you have to follow your heart regardless of the consequences and is a fabulous addition to a series that is, undoubtedly, quickly becoming one of my all-time favourites.

Synopsis:

I’m gonna kill my brother.

I should be in the office keeping our tattoo ink distribution company together. Instead, I’m stuck dealing with a 22-year-old, tatted-up tinkerbell. Em Vicious is a walking, talking contradiction: a sassy, goth fairy with a body inked in flowers, stars, and jewels.

While she’s promoting Ambassador Ink, the flirtatious, free spirit needs a babysitter. And thanks to my brother and his wife who’s about to drop twins, I’m the one who has to accompany her during her tour as a guest artist at tattoo shops across the country over the next four weeks.

Sharing the same space with an immature artist is hard enough, yet something about her has me thinking about my own past.

When the barbs become banter, and desire flourishes from frustration, I should tell her to turn and walk away. I see too much of myself in her–and it scares me. I’m afraid the pressure of money and fame might lead her to the same place it lead me–the peak of a suspension bridge and ready to jump.

CRAZY FOR YOU is a full-length standalone novel in the Material Girls series. Happily Ever After guaranteed. WARNING: Be ready for playful banter, forced proximity, enemies to lovers, and a sexy May-December romance.

EXCERPT:

From Chapter 4 – Zayne

I’m going to kill Louis for making me do this.

We haven’t even left the gate at Charlotte Douglas International Airport, and I need a drink already. When the hell do they start serving in coach?

Any attraction that I may have felt for Em Vicious that day I ran into her in the hallway at Ambassador has completely melted away after listening to her record a fifteen-second Instagram story video for the fiftieth time.

“You’ve gotta stop,” I say rubbing my forehead as I check my e-mails.

“Stop what?” she asks, lowering her phone and turning to me. She can’t be completely clueless as to how irritating it is to hear her record the same fucking message over and over.

“Just post the damn video. If I have to hear you say ‘Hey! This is Em Vicious on my way to Philly—’” I say in a shrill tone. “—one more time I’ll cut my ears off.”

Her nose wrinkles in disgust. “Simmer down, Van Gogh. I don’t even sound like that.”

“You’re right. You sound like nails on a fucking chalkboard.” It’s the worst comeback ever. I’m going to have to step up my sarcasm game if I’m going to last a month with her.

“Zayne,” she says in a condescending tone, patting my arm. “You wanted to be in the video, didn’t you? I’m so sorry I didn’t even think about it.”

She extends her arm and starts recording again. “Hey, all! It’s your girl, Em Vicious. And this is my buddy Zayne from the fabulous Ambassador Ink team. We’re on our way to Philly for the first stop on the EmVee takes over the North tour.”

When she throws up a peace sign, I groan and push her arm away. I don’t have the patience for this shit.
