Thoughtful, tender, and heart-tugging!

The Museum of Ordinary People is a sweet, poignant tale that takes you into the life of the kind, considerate Jess Baxter as her world gets suddenly turned upside down when, while she is still struggling to come to grips with the loss of her mother, she discovers an extraordinary place that takes and safely stores all those precious things that to most may seem like just trash but to others are layered in memories and love, and where together with the new owner, Alex Brody, she begins to uncover new purpose, passion, long-buried secrets, and unconditional friendships.

The writing is nostalgic and heartfelt. The characters are authentic, dependable, and supportive. And the plot is a delightfully engaging mix of life, loss, family, friendship, kindness, honesty, acceptance, generosity, romance, humour, introspection, grief, loneliness, and love.

Overall, The Museum of Ordinary People is a sweet, moving, uplifting tale by Gayle that does a brilliant job once again of highlighting his exceptional ability to create genuine, relatable characters and unique, memorable storylines that thoroughly enchant from start to finish.

Atmospheric, alluring, and rich!

The Paris Deception is a vivid, engaging tale set in France during WWII that takes you into the life of Sophie Dix, a young art restorer who, after fleeing the rising Nazi rule in Germany, uses her position, knowledge, contacts, and help from her estranged, widowed sister-in-law Fabienne Brandt to help save and secure as much art as possible from the Jeu de Plume museum in Paris by creating forgeries and smuggling as many pieces as possible into hiding at the expense of her own safety and all those around her.

The prose is charged and tense. The characters are resilient, brave, and endearing. And the plot is a poignant tale about life, loss, family, secrets, desperation, danger, tragedy, grief, friendship, art, romance, and the horrors and hardships of war.

Overall, The Paris Deception is an immersive, captivating, informative tale by Turnbull inspired by real-life events that sweeps you away to another time and place and does an exceptional job of reminding you that survival and resistance of any form takes enormous strength, exceptional sacrifice, and unimaginable courage.

Emma of 83rd Street is a charming, engaging tale that takes us to NYC and into the life of the kind, trendy Emma Woodhouse as she makes new friends, nears graduation, seeks to obtain the career of her dreams, relies a little too heavily on her overconfident matchmaking skills, and navigates a growing attraction to the boy next door who only sees her as a friend who still needs to do a little growing up.

The writing style is witty and sharp. The characters are amusing, layered, and supportive. And the plot is a smart, engaging tale full of tricky moments, awkward situations, quirky mishaps, delicious chemistry, snappy banter, romantic drama, glitz, glamour, tension, friendship, and self-reflection.

Overall, Emma of 83rd Street is an enjoyable, entertaining, modern retelling of Jane Austen’s Emma that’s an outstanding debut by Bellezza & Harding with its endearing characters, heartfelt moments, contemporary storyline, and ending that leaves you with a smile.

The Secret Book of Flora Lea is a captivating, poignant tale set in England during 1939, as well as 1960, that takes you into the lives of the Linden family, especially two sisters, Hazel, a teenage girl who uses her imagination and storytelling to fascinate and entertain, and Flora, a young child who loves to get lost in the magical worlds and adventures her big sister creates, whose lives are unimaginably changed forever when they are sent to the British countryside to escape the dangers of living in London during wartime.

The prose is eloquent and expressive. The characters are flawed, tormented, and optimistic. And the plot is an exceptionally touching tale about life, loss, family, secrets, separation, desperation, grief, friendship, tragedy, the magic of storytelling, and first love.

The Golden Doves is a charged, intriguing tale that takes you into the lives of Josie Anderson, an American Intelligence Officer, and Arlette LaRue, a French waitress, both former spies and Ravensbrück prisoners whose lives intersect and collide once again seven years post-WWII when the hunt for the illusive, evil Dr. Snow and the search for a missing, but cherished child find them both in the tropics of French Guiana hoping to heal their hearts, unravel the secrets from the past, and finally find some justice for it all.

Moving, insightful, and incredibly atmospheric!

Where Coyotes Howl is a gritty, intriguing tale that sweeps you away to Wyoming during the early twentieth century and into the lives of the townsfolk of Wallace, especially schoolteacher Ellen Webster and cowboy Charlie Bacon, as they struggle to maintain their livelihoods, identities, sanity, health, and love for each other in harsh weather, barren plains, extreme loss, scarcity of money, and unimaginable tragedy.

The writing is eloquent and vivid. The characters are resilient, devoted, and strong. And the plot is a harrowing tale about life, loss, hope, family, friendship, grief, culture, community, hardship, poverty, trust, survival, and love.

Overall, Where Coyotes Howl is a beautifully written, exceptionally detailed, affecting novel by Dallas that I absolutely adored. It’s one of those novels that I went into thinking it would be good and finished it knowing it was great.

Layered, unpredictable, and tortuous!

Homecoming is a captivating, eerie tale set in Australia during 1959, as well as 2018, that sweeps you away and immerses you into the complex, multi-generational Turner-Bridge family, complete with all the powerful emotions, distorted memories, inaccurate tales, long-buried secrets, and unimaginable tragedy that has unconsciously defined and plagued them for the past sixty years.

The prose is rich and lyrical. The main characters are inquisitive, determined, and resourceful. And the plot is an emotional, mysterious saga filled with life, loss, love, familial drama, heartbreak, community, secrets, lies, deception, moral dilemmas, sorrow, and tragedy.

Overall, Homecoming is another exquisitely written, exceptionally detailed, beautifully cunning novel by Morton that kept me guessing from the very first page and ultimately left me surprised, satisfied, and thoroughly entertained.

The Soulmate is a gripping domestic thriller that delves into the intricate, entangled bonds that exist between friends and family members and reminds us that everything is not always as it seems and behind all those smiles and happy faces often hides an abundance of lies, secrets, and swirling emotions.

The writing is ominous and tight. The characters are complex, troubled, and secretive. And the plot, told from alternating perspectives, is sinister and tense as it twists, turns, and unravels all the actions, motivations, personalities, and relationships within it.

The Soulmate, at its core, is a novel about life, love, loyalty, family, marital discord, mental illness, parenthood, friendship, and deception. It’s intense, menacing, enthralling, and, without a doubt, another fantastic page-turner by Hepworth you don’t want to miss.

Mysterious, romantic, and entertaining!

A Spinster’s Guide to Danger and Dukes sweeps you away to the British countryside during 1867 and into the life of the independent, reliable Poppy Delamare who, after discovering her sister is accused of murdering her conniving husband, quickly heads home to do whatever it takes to prove her innocence even if it means agreeing to a fake engagement with the handsome, arrogant Duke of Langham, Joshua Fielding.

The prose is witty and sharp. The characters are resourceful, vulnerable, and passionate. And the plot is a fulfilling blend of family, friendship, danger, desire, societal expectations, scheming behaviour, tricky situations, awkward moments, secrets, attraction, and true love.

Overall, A Spinster’s Guide to Danger and Dukes is another humorous, charming, adventurous addition to the Ladies Most Scandalous series by Collins, complete with characters I couldn’t help but root for and a swoon-worthy ending that left me smitten, satisfied, and hopeful that there’s still a lot more to come!

Captivating, heart-tugging, and absorbing!

Goodnight from Paris is an immersive, tender tale set in Nazi-Occupied France during WWII that follows American actress Drue Leyton Tartière who, after her husband heads off to Brittany as a liaison for the British military, takes a job working for Jean Fraysse at Paris Mondiale broadcasting the true horrors of war to the American people while also doing whatever she can, even at the detriment to her own safety, to help as many downed Allied pilots as possible escape the enemy and find their way home.

The prose is rich and vivid. The characters are brave, vulnerable, and strong. And the plot is a compelling blend of life, loss, secrets, surprises, heartbreak, betrayal, survival, danger, grief, war, friendship, romance, and selflessness.

Overall, Goodnight from Paris is a bittersweet, affecting, atmospheric tale inspired by real-life events that sweeps you away to another time and place and does an exceptional job of reminding you that survival of any form takes unimaginable sacrifice, enormous courage, and exceptional strength.
