Berlin, Germany, 1930—When the Nazis rise to power, Sofie von Meyer Rhodes and her academic husband benefit from the military ambitions of Germany’s newly elected chancellor when Jürgen is offered a high-level position in their burgeoning rocket program. Although they fiercely oppose Hitler’s radical views, and joining his ranks is unthinkable, it soon becomes clear that if Jürgen does not accept the job, their income will be taken away. Then their children. And then their lives.

Huntsville, Alabama, 1950—Twenty years later, Jürgen is one of many German scientists pardoned and granted a position in America’s space program. For Sofie, this is a chance to leave the horrors of her past behind. But when rumors about the Rhodes family’s affiliation with the Nazi party spread among her new American neighbors, idle gossip turns to bitter rage, and the act of violence that results tears apart a family and leaves the community wondering—is it an act of vengeance or justice?

Review:

Moving, thought-provoking, and tragic!

The German Wife is a vivid, tender tale set in Berlin, Germany, as well as Huntsville, Alabama, between 1930 and 1950 that takes you into the lives of the Rhodes family. A family whose individual actions, decisions, choices and secrets made during the war will have long-lasting effects and irrevocably change lives forever.

The writing is emotional and tense. The characters are intelligent, torn, and distrustful. And the plot is an evocative tale of life, loss, heartbreak, prejudices, hope, tragedy, survival, friendship, love, community, and wartime politics.

Overall, The German Wife is an absorbing, heart-wrenching, beautifully written tale by Rimmer inspired by real-life events, Operation Paperclip, that does an exceptional job of highlighting her impressive research into this intelligence program that brought Nazis chemists, physicists and rocket specialists to America after WWII, without being tried for their previous crimes, in order for them to use their acquired knowledge to benefit NASA and other US government agencies.

From the bestselling author of The Things We Cannot Say comes a poignant novel about the fault in memories and the lies that can bond a family together—or tear it apart.

With her father recently moved to a care facility for his worsening dementia, Beth Walsh volunteers to clear out the family home and is surprised to discover the door to her childhood playroom padlocked. She’s even more shocked at what’s behind it—a hoarder’s mess of her father’s paintings, mounds of discarded papers and miscellaneous junk in the otherwise fastidiously tidy house.

As she picks through the clutter, she finds a loose journal entry in what appears to be her late mother’s handwriting. Beth and her siblings grew up believing their mother died in a car accident when they were little more than toddlers, but this note suggests something much darker. Beth soon pieces together a disturbing portrait of a woman suffering from postpartum depression and a husband who bears little resemblance to the loving father Beth and her siblings know. With a newborn of her own and struggling with motherhood, Beth finds there may be more tying her and her mother together than she ever suspected.

Exploring the expectations society places on women of every generation, Kelly Rimmer explores the profound struggles two women unwittingly share across the decades set within an engrossing family mystery that may unravel everything they believed to be true.

Review:

Moving, mysterious, and absorbing!

Truths I Never Told You is an engaging, affecting story that immerses you into the lives of the Walsh family as they struggle to come to grips with an ailing father, a family home filled with nostalgia and secrets, a sister grappling with postpartum depression, and the real truth behind the life and loss of their mother Grace when they were children.

The writing is smooth and emotive. The characters are genuine, supportive, and multilayered. And the plot, including all the subplots, intertwine and unravel into a hopeful tale about life, loss, family, parenthood, mental illness, secrets, deception, introspection, forgiveness, and love.

Overall, Truths I Never Told You is a heartbreaking, touching, enlightening tale by Rimmer that reminds us life is too short for grievances, resentments, and regrets, and psychological disorders are very real concerns that should never be left untreated.

The only vow she’s ever been prepared to make is not to say “I do”

Running a major tech company without breaking a sweat? No problem. But being bridesmaid at her best friend’s wedding is giving Jess Cohen a bad case of the jitters. Maybe that’s because she’ll have to face the groom’s brother, Jake–the man she’s been avoiding for the last two years. Jake, who Jess dumped mercilessly, unable to tell him the truth about her past. Jake, who’s loyal, loving and all wrong for someone who refuses to be tied down. If only Jess’s heart could remember that.

Jake Winton spent four months secretly dating Jess, and the past two years trying–and failing–to forget her. He’d been ready to propose, convinced Jess was every bit as in love with him as he was with her. Now he’s sure their connection is still there, sizzling and undeniable. Whatever she’s holding back, he can handle–if only she’ll trust him with her secrets, her fears and her heart.

Review:

Engaging, emotive, and rewarding!

Undone is a heartwarming, second-chance romance that brings together the sweet, kindhearted Jake who’s still hopelessly in love with the one woman who doesn’t seem to want him back, and the independent, stubborn Jess who may finally have found the one man to help her overcome all the hurt and baggage from her past.

The writing is smooth and tender. The characters are dependable, loyal, and multifaceted. And the plot is a passionate, touching tale filled with sizzling tension, poignant moments, scorching chemistry, genuine emotion, and a swoony, happy-ever-after ending.

Overall, Undone is a lighthearted, charming, entertaining read by Rimmer that’s a fantastic addition to the Start Up in the City series with its push-pull storyline and wonderful cast of characters.

Sometimes it’s what you don’t say that can change everything…

Isabel Winton had planned to spend the last few days of her marriage at her vacation home, intending to reflect, regroup…or maybe just do some solitary sulking. Instead, she collides with her almost ex, Paul, who has the same idea. Too stubborn to leave, Isabel figures this is a chance for them to get some closure. But she’s astonished to see that months apart have transformed her emotionally aloof husband into “Paul 2.0,” more open than ever before.

Paul was blindsided when Isabel left him. He had no idea she felt he was more committed to his career than to their marriage. With his new, hard-won self-awareness, he blames himself for letting her walk away. But winning her back will take more than simple words. It’ll mean finding the courage to grow, to trust, and grab a second chance at life by each other’s sides.

Review:

Sincere, emotional, and sweet!

Unspoken is a heartfelt, second-chance romance between the intelligent, workaholic Paul and the spirited, outgoing Isobel as they discover just days before their divorce is finalized that perhaps they both made a lot of mistakes and that their love is something worth fighting for.

The writing is passionate and smooth. The characters are frustrated, angry, and sympathetic. And the plot is a genuine, push-pull tale of relationship dynamics, miscommunication, introspection, patience, acceptance, forgiveness, love, friendship, understanding, steamy romance, and new beginnings.

Overall, Unspoken is a heartwrenching, sexy, tender read by Rimmer with characters you can’t help but root for and a happy-ever-after ending that leaves you smiling, satisfied, and hoping for more.

Co-parenting with her best friend. What could go wrong?

The next three decades of Abby Herbert’s life are as carefully planned out as the last three were. Best career ever? Check. Great friends, one of whom she lives with in a stunning Tribeca apartment? Check. Perfect man to share her dream family? Surely just a matter of time. But then she gets devastating news from her doctor—if she wants to get pregnant, she needs to get started on that by…well, yesterday. On the bright side, she has the perfect person in mind to be the father.

Tech entrepreneur Marcus Ross has been harboring decidedly not-friends feelings toward Abby. He doesn’t want to lose her and, knowing his feelings are one-sided, he’s been trying to move on. When he learns about the curveball Abby’s just been hit with, he promises to be there for her however she wants him to be, even if the idea of fatherhood is a little complicated for him right now. But it isn’t long until boundaries start to blur, and a deal struck between friends starts to turn into something perilously close to feelings that could change everything…

Review:

Sweet, touching, and romantic!

Unexpected is an adorable, lively tale that introduces us to the gamer and planner extraordinaire Abby who just discovered her dream to become a mother needs to occur sooner rather than later, and her commitment-phobic, best friend Marcus who is more than willing to help out the girl he’s secretly in love with as long as in the end he can have it all.

The prose is witty and warm. The characters are fun-loving, hesitant, and engaging. And the plot is a playful mix of push-pull drama, chemistry, flirty banter, palpable attraction, tender moments, and steamy baby-making.

Overall, Unexpected is a contemporary, charming, entertaining tale that has just the right amount of emotion, angst, and passion to make this an easy, lighthearted, enjoyable read.
