Frankie Elkin has dedicated her life to doing what no one else will: searching for missing people the world has forgotten.

When the police have given up, when the public no longer remembers, when the media has never paid attention, Frankie starts looking. She has found fourteen victims to date, but none yet alive. Traveling from city to city with more regrets than belongings, Frankie is drawn to a new case in Boston, and to a neighbourhood with a rough reputation.

Angelique Badeau, a local teenager and Haitian immigrant, vanished eleven months ago in the middle of the day from her high school.  No scrap of surveillance footage, no cell phone tracking;
Angelique simply disappeared.

Despite resistance from the Boston PD and the victim’s wary family, Frankie starts to unpick the truth of Angelique’s disappearance and starts to discover there are those that don’t want these questions answered. But Frankie will stop at nothing to find Angelique and bring her home, even if it means the next person to go missing will be herself …

Review:

Twisty, tight, and incredibly atmospheric!

One Step Too Far is an engrossing, sinister thrill ride that takes us back on the road to solve the unsolved with Frankie Elkin, a middle-aged wanderer who now finds herself in the rugged Wyoming countryside and completely out of her element when she joins a search party, including the victim’s father, three of his friends, and three search and rescue specialists heading into the Shoshone National Forest wilderness to once and for all discover what happened to Timothy O’Day five years ago when he stepped away from his campsite never to be seen again.

The writing is brisk and sharp. The characters are tormented, scarred, and vulnerable. And the plot is tense, action-packed and full of suspicious personalities, unreliable characters, unexpected twists, nefarious motivations, mayhem, survival, violence, and murder.

Overall, One Step Too Far is an unpredictable, tortuous, gripping tale by Gardner, that like all her previous novels, kept me guessing from the very first page and left me unsettled, highly entertained, and certainly eager for more.

Tell me the story of how you two met…

Laura has built a career out of interviewing people about their epic real life love stories.

When she picks up the wrong suitcase at the airport, Laura wonders if this could be the start of something that’s written in the stars.

From piano sheet-music to a battered copy of her favourite book, Laura finds in the bag evidence of everything she could hope for in a partner.

If Laura’s job has taught her anything it’s that when it comes to love, you can’t let opportunity pass you by. Now Laura is determined to track down the owner of the suitcase, and her own happy ending.

But what if fate has other ideas?

Review:

Intimate, poignant, and romantic!

Just Haven’t Met You Yet is an addictive, uplifting, slow-burning tale that takes you into the life of Laura Le Quesne, a young woman who, after heading to the Channel Islands to investigate and write the story of her late parent’s epic love affair, also finds herself on the hunt to identify and meet, with the help of a broody cabbie, the one she has been waiting for her whole life after she picks up the wrong suitcase of a man who seems, based on his possessions, to be her fated soul mate.

The writing is warm and sweet. The characterization is spot on with a delightful cast of characters that are endearing, genuine, and kind. And the plot is a charming tale full of hope, heart, and humour.

Just Haven’t Met You Yet is, ultimately, a story about love, loss, life, trust, family, friendship, community, ageing, self-discovery, happiness, and fate. It is a sentimental, absorbing, compelling novel by Cousens that does an exceptional job of highlighting that true love is not just roses, chocolates, and grand gestures but all the tender, touching, supportive moments in between. I absolutely adored this novel and look forward to reading all of this author’s previous novels as soon as I possibly can.

ALL PRESIDENTS HAVE NIGHTMARES. THIS ONE IS ABOUT TO COME TRUE.

Matthew Keating, a one-time Navy SEAL and a former US President, has always defended his family as fiercely as he has his country.

Now these defences are under attack. And it’s personal.

Keating’s teenage daughter, Melanie, has been abducted, turning every parent’s deepest fear into a matter of national security.

As the world watches, Keating embarks on a one-man special-ops mission that tests his strengths: as a leader, a warrior, and a father.

Because Keating knows that in order to save Melanie’s life he will have to put his own on the line . . .

Review:

Action-packed, thrilling, and twisty!

The President’s Daughter is a propulsive, entertaining thriller that takes you into the life of former US President and ex-Navy Seal Matt Keating as he does everything in his power to find and recover his kidnapped teenage daughter from a sadistic terrorist driven by vengeance.

The writing is tight and crisp. The characters are astute, tenacious, and authentic. And the plot, with its short, intense chapters, keeps you on the edge of your seat as it immerses you, page after page, into a world full of terrorism, politics, revenge, corruption, coercion, military operations, and Secret Service drama.

Overall, The President’s Daughter is a meticulous, compelling, intricate mystery by this dynamic writing duo that I thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommend.

With each day that passes, Anna’s life is under increasing threat. And a the pressure mounts, it won’t be long before something cracks. . .

Review:

Ominous, atmospheric, and twisty!

The Whispers is a menacing, character-driven thriller that delves into the complex dynamics between friends and highlights just how dependent and toxic some of those relationships can ultimately become.

The prose is taut and intense. The characters are plagued, deceptive, and impulsive. And the plot using a back-and-forth, past/present style does a nice job of building tension as it unfolds a tortuous tale of friendship, lies, secrets, manipulation, and obsession.

As some of you know, I’m a huge fan of Heidi Perks, and this novel didn’t disappoint. The Whispers is another riveting, edgy, unsettling tale by Perks that kept me guessing from start to finish, and as always, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

A gritty, heart-stopping crime thriller from an exciting new voice in crime writing

We were told to meet at a rooftop bar.

Four friends, bound by one terrible secret.

No one knew why we were there.

Then we saw a woman, watched as she fell from the edge and plunged to her death.

The police think it’s suicide, but I know better.

Someone is sending a message.

Review:

Tortuous, gritty, and addictive!

If I Fall is a malicious, chilling thriller that sees DS Nell Jackson working once again with Crime Analyst Carla Brown when the apparent suicide of a homeless women leads back to a small group of friends who seem to be covering up sinfully wicked actions from the past.

The prose is crisp and tight. The characters are flawed, troubled, and authentic. And the plot is an intense, gripping tale full of twists, turns, intrigue, deception, revenge, religious connotations, suspicious personalities, abuse, bigotry, violence, and murder.

Overall, If I Fall is a raw, cunning, intricate tale by Davies that’s another promising addition to what could turn out to be with its well-drawn, intriguing characters and darkly creative storylines an amazing, must-read series.

The electrifying new Alex Delaware thriller from the #1 New York Times bestselling master of suspense.

Ellie Barker never knew her mother.

When she was barely three years old, her mother was found with a bullet in her head inside a torched Cadillac, overturned on Mulholland Drive. No physical evidence, no witness and no apparent motive.

Thirty-six years on, many detectives tried and failed to get to the bottom of the case.

Desperate for answers, Ellie hires LAPD homicide lieutenant Milo Sturgis, who calls in the expertise of brilliant psychologist Alex Delaware, to investigate.

But as the duo start digging, the mystery becomes even more twisted. And they soon discover a string of dangerous threats still lurking in the present…

Review:

Intricate, sharp, and sinister!

Serpentine is a menacing, creepy police procedural that sees psychologist Alex Delaware and LAPD Lieutenant Milo Sturgis tangled up in a thirty-six-year-old cold case that seems at first glance to be an isolated car accident, but as the investigation unfolds and numerous related murders crop up, this case quickly becomes a lot more complex and dangerous to all those involved.

The writing is descriptive and clever. The characters are multifaceted, elusive, and secretive. And the plot is an ominous, compelling mix of twists, turns, red herrings, secrets, deduction, mayhem, manipulation, violence, and murder.

Overall, Serpentine is riveting, dark, crafty and unbelievably the thirty-sixth book in the Alex Delaware series. I have yet to read a novel by Kellerman that isn’t suspenseful, pacey, and extremely satisfying, and this one, once again, didn’t disappoint.

Review:

Charged, absorbing, and suspenseful!

Before She Disappeared is a well-paced, menacing thrill ride that takes us into the life of Frankie Elkin, a scarred, middle-aged woman who even while struggling with a past littered with grief, addiction, and heartbreak, travels from place to place identifying and pursuing new evidence in cold cases, but this latest investigation may have the highest odds yet with a missing teenage victim who may still be alive and the people who took her more than willing to kill to keep her.

The writing is sharp and meticulous. The characters are determined, ruthless, and resourceful. And the plot is a mysterious, compelling web of deduction, lies, exploitation, corruption, greed, violence, manipulation, and murder.

Before She Disappeared is another sophisticated, gritty, unnerving read by Gardner that may be the first standalone novel she’s written in a while but still has all the twists, turns, suspense, in-depth character development, and forensic analysis we’ve come to expect and love from all her previous novels.

ONE WILD PARTY.

FOUR COUNTS OF MURDER.

A mansion in Beverly Hills is leased out to host an event wild enough to herald the end of days.

The next day there isn’t a living soul to be seen. In the driveway sits a superstretch limo, unlocked, with four bodies inside it. Nothing links the victims together. Each has been killed in a different way.

Now it’s up to brilliant psychologist Alex Delaware and LAPD Lieutenant Milo Sturgis to begin their grisliest and most baffling case yet.

As they struggle to make sense of the mass slaying, they will be forced to confront a level of evil that nothing can prepare them for.

Review:

Deviant, sophisticated, and gripping!

In this latest novel by Kellerman, The Museum of Desire, we head back to Beverly Hills where LAPD Lieutenant Milo Sturgis and his sidekick psychologist Alex Delaware find themselves on a gruesome case involving an empty mansion, a fancy limousine, and four brutally slain bodies who seem to have no connection to each other whatsoever.

The writing is meticulous and absorbing. The characters are multilayered, persistent, and intuitive. And the plot, including all the subplots, unravel and intertwine methodically into a sinister tale full of deception, deprivation, manipulation, mayhem, violence, and murder.

It’s hard to believe that this novel, The Museum of Desire is the thirty-fifth book in the Alex Delaware series. In fact, in the late 80s and early 90s, Jonathan Kellerman was my favourite author, and although over the past decade or so I haven’t picked up the newest titles in this series it was so wonderful to crawl back into this dark, gritty side of Hollywood and reacquaint myself with these unique characters.

When a body is pulled out of an office fire, three women are first in line for questioning.
All of them have reasons for wanting revenge against the company’s CEO.

It could be Laura, who has returned to work to find that her maternity cover isn’t leaving. The CEO insists he’s doing what’s best for the company. Laura isn’t convinced he’s telling the truth.

Or there’s Mia. Brought in as temporary cover for Laura, she has quickly made herself indispensable – and popular with her colleagues. But if people knew why she was so desperate to keep her job, they might not welcome her so freely.

Then there’s Janie, wife to the CEO, who gave up her courtroom career to support her husband and his business. She has her own secret to protect – and will go to any length to keep it safe.

They never thought it would come to this.

Review:

Ominous, slow-burning, and secretive!

Three Perfect Liars is a compelling, malicious, character-driven thriller that takes you into the lives of three main characters. Janie, a big-city defence attorney, turned stay-at-home mom; Mia, a temporary employee with a hidden agenda; and Laura, a new mom returning to work where her replacement seems to be bound and determined to steal her job.

The writing is tight and tense. The characters are consumed, secretive, and troubled. And the plot told using a mixture of narrative, police interviews, and alternating timelines, before-and-after the fire is a suspenseful tale full of well-timed twists, unforeseen surprises, deception, insecurities, lies, obsession, manipulation, violence, arson, and murder.

Overall, Three Perfect Liars is an addictive, clever, tortuous tale by Perks that highlights the complex relationships that exist within a company and reminds us that revenge often has no limits.

A body is found in the hills – but the truth still lies buried…

In a small town in the Deep South, Flora Dane is part of a task force committed to hunting down every last trace of notorious serial kidnapper Jacob Ness. As his last victim, imprisoned by Ness in a small box for over a year, she knew him better than most. Even after his death, his evil still lingers.

But this is the kind of town that doesn’t take kindly to strangers asking questions.

The kind of town where dark secrets lurk just beneath the surface.

The kind of town she might not leave alive.

Review:

Propulsive, Riveting, and disturbing!

In this latest novel by Gardner, When You See Me, Detective D.D. Warren, FBI Agent Kimberly Quincy, and survivor-turned-vigilante Flora Dane head to the Georgia Hills where authorities believe bones of an early Jacob Ness victim have been found. But as the investigation unfolds and more bones are discovered it would seem that things in the charming town of Niche aren’t quite what they first appeared and a much darker, sinister danger seems to be at play.

The writing is gritty and tight. The characters are diligent, scarred, and relentless. And the plot told from multiple perspectives keeps you on the edge of your seat as it submerges you into a menacing tale full of twists, turns, secrets, red herrings, deception, manipulation, deduction, attraction, mayhem, violence, and murder.

Once again, When You See Me has proven that when it comes to writing exceptionally complex, fast-paced, deftly plotted, police procedurals with exceptional character development and nefarious storylines Gardner is definitely one of the best.
