Intricate, gritty, and unsettling!

A Thousand Natural Shocks is a dark, compelling tale that takes you into the life of reporter Dash Hassan as his life begins to spiral out of control when he joins a wellness cult whose intentions are not quite what they seem, he overindulges in memory-erasing pills, and he triggers a serial killer to come out of retirement when he makes up a story in order to save his career.

The writing is tight and intense. The characters are vulnerable, impulsive, and tormented. And the plot is an engrossing tale full of desperation, manipulation, family, troubled pasts, haunting memories, trauma, paranoia, death, and murder.

Overall, A Thousand Natural Shocks is a dark, atmospheric, promising debut by Hussain that kept me enthralled from the very first page and left me entertained, satisfied, and eager to read whatever his deliciously sinister mind manages to come up with next.

The Secrets of Flowers is predominately set in England during the early 1900s, as well as present day, and is told from two different perspectives. Emma, a grieving widow who endeavours to discover everything she can about the person responsible for arranging the flowers on the Titanic, and Violet, a young woman whose life takes an unexpected twist when she becomes a stewardess on one of the most famous ocean liners ever.

The prose is eloquent and expressive. The characters are troubled, determined, and endearing. And the plot is a moving tale about life, love, loss, emotion, betrayal, family, friendship, heartbreak, guilt, grief, hope, and regret.

Overall, The Secrets of Flowers is a heartwarming, alluring, compelling tale by Page that highlights the beauty and power of flowers and is a wonderful choice for anyone who enjoys a dual timeline story with both a sliver of mystery and a touch of romance.

In this absorbing first instalment in the Remote series, The Six, Rickstad has written a sharp, sinister thrill ride featuring the consumed, relentless FBI Special Agent Lukas Stark and his new strangely talented partner Gilles Garnier as they join forces to hunt a cold, calculating serial killer who has a penchant for reenacting the same heinous crime over and over and somehow always seems to be one step ahead.

The writing is taut and intense. The characters are meticulous, persistent, and tormented. And the plot is an engrossing, eerie whodunit full of twists, turns, obsession, depravity, violence, and murder, all interwoven with a dab of the supernatural.

Overall, Remote: The Six is a fast-paced, tortuous, disturbing tale by Rickstad that not only leaves you eager for me but also spending a little time contemplating the idea of remote viewing and the potentially horrific consequences and evil it could lead to.

When She Was Gone is a well-paced, engrossing thriller that sees former London police officer Rose Campbell heading to Australia when her estranged daughter and two of the children she nannies go missing, but as the investigation unfolds and dangerous secrets start to come to light, it quickly becomes apparent that this case is a lot more sinister and complicated than anyone could have imagined.

The writing is tight and intense. The characters are layered, secretive, and persistent. And the plot is an ominous tale full of twists, turns, red herrings, secrets, deduction, revenge, adultery, power, control, mayhem, and manipulation.

Overall, When She Was Gone is a relentless, simmering, eerie tale by Foster that keeps you guessing from start to finish and is a wonderful reminder of the lengths a parent will go to protect their child.

Although largely overlooked by historians, the accomplishments of Eliza Lucas influenced the course of US history. When she passed away in 1793, President George Washington served as a pallbearer at her funeral.

This book is set between 1739 and 1744, with romance, intrigue, forbidden friendships, and political and financial threats weaving together to form the story of a remarkable young woman whose actions were before their time: the story of the indigo girl.

Review:

Immersive, evocative, and fascinating!

The Indigo Girl is an atmospheric, absorbing tale that sweeps you away to South Carolina during 1739 and into the life of Eliza Lucas, a sixteen-year-old girl who, after her father leaves her in charge of three of his plantations, endeavours to save her family estates through grit, determination and a little help from three others by producing the challenging, yet lucrative indigo dye.

The prose is eloquent and expressive. The characters are diligent, brave, and independent. And the plot is an absorbing tale of life, loss, love, friendship, familial drama, injustice, support, passion, betrayal, courage, and the ins and outs of indigo dye-making in the early eighteenth century.

Overall, The Indigo Girl is a compelling, rich, illuminating tale by Boyd that I absolutely devoured and which enthralled, entertained, and informed me!

Unsettling, intricate, and gripping!

The Nothing Man is a skillfully plotted, sinister tale that takes you into the life of Jim Doyle, an elderly security guard who appears to be an honest, loyal, happily married father of one, but behind that reluctant smile lies a depraved secret and a dark impulse to stalk, violate, and murder that only a few know about, most of whom are already dead, except for the one all those years ago who he mistakenly let get away.

The writing is sharp and crisp. The characters are secretive, cunning, and vulnerable. And the plot, using a story within a story, builds quickly, creating intensity and suspense as it unravels all the relationships, motivations, personalities, deception, and devious behaviours within it.

Overall, The Nothing Man is a fast-paced, unnerving, impressive tale by Howard that does an exceptional job of eerily reminding us that even the most heinous of evil often live comfortably amongst us, merely hidden behind masks of normality.

In this compelling third instalment in the Nick Mason series, An Honorable Assassin, Hamilton has written an adrenaline-pumping thriller that sees the recently released prisoner Mason being swept away to Jakarta by an organization that expects him to execute the criminal mastermind and financier to the deadliest terrorist groups in the world, Hashim Baya before they decide to kill his ex-wife and daughter for the fun of it.

The writing is descriptive and tight. The characters are astute, tenacious, and resilient. And the plot keeps you on the edge of your seat with its intense chapters that submerge you, page after page, into a world full of danger, deception, secrets, depravity, corruption, lies, arrogance, violence, and murder.

Overall, An Honorable Assassin is a cleverly woven, sinister, highly entertaining mystery with a good sense of urgency, great characterization, and a brisk pace that’s a fabulous addition to the Nick Mason series and a novel that really shouldn’t be missed.
