First in a bold, sexy new small-town Alaska contemporary romance series from Jackie Ashenden

Deep River, Alaska boasts a fiercely independent though small population. The people who live here love it, and they don’t much care what anyone else thinks. Until the day Silas Quinn comes back and tells them an oil reserve has been found below the town and now it’s neighbor vs. neighbor. Some want to take the money and run, while others want to tell the oil company to put its rigs where the sun don’t shine.

Hope Dawson never expected to leave Deep River. Her mom needs her. Her grandfather died and left her the local hangout to run. Her dreams of college and adventure died long ago. Until Silas comes back to town, holding the key to set her free. But freedom means she loses him again, and he’s the one she’s really always wanted.

Review:

Quaint, sweet, and optimistic!

Come Home to Deep River is a tenderhearted, charming tale that transports you to Deep River, Alaska and into the lives of the dependable, broody, Silas Quinn and the loyal, hardworking Hope Dawson as together they grieve the friend they lost, work to save the town they grew up in, and discover that unconditional love is right there for the taking.

The prose is smooth and fluid. The characters are hesitant, troubled, and reliable. And the plot is a hopeful tale of life, love, loss, drama, family, friendship, community, forgiveness, acceptance, trust, self-reflection, taking chances, and finding happiness.

Overall, I found Come Home to Deep River to be a warm, cosy, romantic tale by Ashenden, that’s a promising start to the Alaska Homecoming series with its unique setting, intriguing characters, and uplifting storyline.

About Jackie Ashenden

Jackie has been writing fiction since she was eleven years old. Mild mannered fantasy/SF/pseudo-literary writer by day, obsessive romance writer by night, she used to balance her writing with the more serious job of librarianship until a chance meeting with another romance writer prompted her to throw off the shackles of her day job and devote herself to the true love of her heart – writing romance. She particularly likes to write dark, emotional stories with alpha heroes who've just got the world to their liking only to have it blown wide apart by their kick-ass heroines.

She lives in Auckland, New Zealand with her husband, the inimitable Dr Jax, two kids, two cats and some guppies (possibly dead guppies by the time you read this). When she's not torturing alpha males and their stroppy heroines, she can be found drinking chocolate martinis, reading anything she can lay her hands on, posting random crap on her blog, or being forced to go mountain biking with her husband.

After a scandalous secret turns their fairy-tale wedding into a nightmare, Rebecca “Bex” Porter and her husband Prince Nicholas are in self-imposed exile. The public is angry. The Queen is even angrier. And the press is salivating. Cutting themselves off from friends and family, and escaping the world’s judgmental eyes, feels like the best way to protect their fragile, all-consuming romance.

But when a crisis forces the new Duke and Duchess back to London, the Band-Aid they’d placed over their problems starts to peel at the edges. Now, as old family secrets and new ones threaten to derail her new royal life, Bex has to face the emotional wreckage she and Nick left behind: with the Queen, with the world, and with Nick’s brother Freddie, whose sins may not be so easily forgotten—nor forgiven.

Review:

Beguiling, entertaining, and delightfully scandalous!

The Heir Affair is a charming, spirited, amusing tale that picks up right where The Royal We left off taking us back into the lives of Bex, Nick and the whole royal crew, including newcomer Princess Daphne of Holland, as the gang faces a new round of challenges including illnesses, pregnancies, infertility, weddings, scandals, and long-buried secrets.

The prose is lighthearted and fun. The characters are charismatic, eccentric, and lovable. And the plot is a playful romp of all the hopes, dreams, goals, heartbreak, family, romance, struggles, sacrifices, fears, politics, and entangled relationships involved with being part of a monarchy.

Overall, The Heir Affair is a winsome, compelling, clever addition to the Royal We series by Cocks and Morgan that leaves you feeling fulfilled and satisfied but undoubtedly eager for more.

As Jane and Seth chase down their blood-thirsty adversary, they finally commit to one another — in the culmination of the love story that fans have been waiting for. As the two come face-to-face with danger, one thing is made clear: it will take both of them working together to confront and defeat this evil.

Review:

Fast-paced, sinister, and intense!

In this latest novel by Johansen, The Persuasion, Eve and Joe’s daughter, Jane MacGuire finds herself the target of a ruthless killer obsessed with owning the priceless Cira’s treasure, and begrudgingly in need of some assistance from her ex-lover Seth Caleb, a man of many special talents and a secretive past of his own.

The prose is ominous and tight. The characters are multilayered, unique, and resourceful. And the plot is a suspenseful tale full of familial drama, tension, obsession, death, kidnapping, cruelty, desperation, violence, and murder, all interwoven with a sliver of the supernatural.

Overall, The Persuasion won’t disappoint fans of Johansen and the Eve Duncan series who’ve come to expect and love her menacing tales, action-packed plots, and smidges of heat.

Hero. Soldier. Spy. Leader. Her name is Nancy Wake.

To the Allies, she was a fearless freedom fighter, a special operations legend, a woman ahead of her time. To the Gestapo, she was a ghost, a shadow, the most wanted person in the world.

But at first, Nancy Wake was just another young woman living in Marseilles and recently engaged to a man she loved. Then France fell to the Nazi blitzkrieg. With her appetite for danger, Nancy quickly finds herself drawn into the underground Resistance standing up to Nazi rule. Gaining notoriety as the White Mouse, with a 5-million-franc bounty hanging over her head, Wake rises to the top of the Nazi’s Most Wanted list — only to find her husband arrested for treasonous activity under suspicion of being the White Mouse himself.

Narrowly escaping to Britain, Wake joins the Special Operations Executive (SOE) and parachutes into the Auvergne, where she must fight for the respect of some of the toughest Resistance fighters in France. As she and her maquisards battle the Nazis, their every engagement brings the end of the war closer — but also places her husband in deeper peril.

A riveting, richly imagined historical thriller, LIBERATION brings to life one of World War II’s most fascinating unsung heroines in all her fierce power and complexity. This is the story of one of the one of the war’s most decorated women, told like never before.

Review:

Fascinating, compelling, and inspiring!

Liberation is an intriguing, adventurous interpretation of the life of Nancy Wake, an Australian runaway who became known by the Nazis as the White Mouse after she used the status and money acquired by her marriage to French Industrialist, Henri Fiocca to aid the French resistance and later as a trained SOE office for Britain help them prepare for D-Day.

The prose is vivid and tense. The characters are vulnerable, resourceful, and courageous. And the plot, set in France during the early 1940s, is a moving tale about life, love, bravery, strength, heartbreak, loss, guilt, grief, loyalty, espionage, malice, betrayal, and survival.

Overall, Liberation is a wonderful blend of harrowing facts and engrossing fiction. It is a fast-paced, memorable, thrilling tale that does a lovely job of highlighting humanities ability to be selflessly heroic under even the direst, most horrific of circumstances.

Review:

Seductive, sweet, and downright salacious!

Carter is the sultry, heartwarming novel featuring the dedicated, talented, pastry chef Elijah and the hard-bodied, hunky, movie star Carter as they discover together a sense of purpose, passion, and fulfilment beyond their careers and the importance of family, friendship, and a place to call home.

The writing is provocative and light. The characters are devoted, supportive, and kind. And the plot unravels quickly into a tale full of sizzling chemistry, undeniable attraction, familial responsibilities, community, fame, tender moments, sexy times, and scrumptious treats.

Overall, Carter is a spicy, uplifting, sensuous tale by Salinger that’s another fantastic addition to the Twilight Falls series and a perfect example of why when it comes to writing racy banter and erotic M/M sex scenes she’s one of the best.

Book Rating: 7.5/10

Working for a department store where Christmas arrives in August, Eve prefers her own festivities to be low key with nothing more complicated than an oven-ready turkey and frozen peas while she spends the day in her pyjamas. Unfortunately, this year her husband has invited his best friend to visit, the glamorous and sophisticated Abby, and Eve reluctantly decides that she needs to inject a little sparkle into their laid back and slightly shabby Christmas. So the celebrations are upgraded to include champagne and canapes along with homemade gravy and organic turkey and plans are made for a Christmas that looks as though it has emerged from the pages of a glossy magazine.

But even the best-laid plans can go wrong and as Eve struggles with her mini Yorkshire puddings and an interfering cat, she is suddenly faced with an unexpected guest and an explosive secret that threatens to put her vision of a perfect Christmas in jeopardy.

Review:

Sweet, dramatic, and festive!

Eve’s Christmas is a charming, angsty tale that takes you into the life of the hardworking, creative Eve who after striving to impress her husband’s best friend and create the perfect Christmas quickly discovers there’s no such thing as perfect when all her well thought out plans are upended when jealousy rears its ugly head, long-hidden secrets are unearthed, and an uninvited guest turns up.

The writing is warm and light. The characters are kind, determined, and genuine. And the plot is an entertaining mix of family, friendship, life, love, manipulation, miscommunication, excessiveness, and the unfortunate environmental consequences of the holidays.

Overall, Eve’s Christmas is a cosy, heartfelt, witty story by Butterfield that reminds us that we often lose perspective of the true meaning of Christmas and that being surrounded by family, friends, and those we love is more important than any beautifully wrapped gift we may find under the tree.

About Julie Butterfield

Julie Butterfield belongs to the rather large group of 'always wanted to write' authors who finally found the time to sit down and put pen to paper - or rather fingers to keyboard.
She wrote her first book purely for pleasure and was very surprised to discover that so many people enjoyed the story and wanted more, so she decided to carry on writing.
It has to be pointed out that her first novel, 'Did I Mention I Won The Lottery' is a complete work of fiction and she did not, in fact, receive millions in her bank account and forget to mention it to her husband - even though he still asks her every day if she has anything to tell him!

Keen to raise funds for the struggling village hall she loved as a child, Becky finds herself at the head of a colourful group aiming to revive the Egglethwaite Christmas pantomime. But when that festive feeling sets in, she discovers there’s more to panto than innuendo and slapped thighs.

Falling in love was not in the script! But as opening night grows closer, she starts to wonder if the panto will ever make it to the stage and, with handsome co-star Marcus on the scene, if she has chosen her right leading man…

The perfect stocking-filler gift!

Review:

Funny, warm, and entertaining!

The Perfect Fit is an amusing, lighthearted tale that takes us to the Yorkshire Dales and into the life of the optimistic, lovable Becky Finn as she meanders through all sorts of highs and lows, from moving home, a long-distance relationship, reviving the village Christmas Pantomime, and the unexpected feelings for her fellow leading man.

The writing is comical and fluid. The characters are sweet, quirky, and endearing. And the plot is a jolly, big-hearted tale full of tricky situations, tender moments, humorous mishaps, self-discovery, friendship, family, community, romance, and holiday cheer.

Overall, The Perfect Fit is another humourous, uplifting, charming tale by Baker that’s a true wintery treat with its engaging characters, festive storyline, and barrel of laughs.
