A Vodou priestess turned amateur sleuth investigating a ritual murder is embroiled in an insidious case of corruption that reaches beyond the shadows of New Orleans.

After solving a crime blamed on Vodou in New Orleans’ French Quarter, Vodou priestess turned amateur detective Reina Dumond has returned to her benevolent work as a healer. But when her friend and enigmatic client Evangeline “Vangie” Stiles comes to her for a spell, Mambo Reina quickly realizes what Vangie really needs is a sleuth.

Something is amiss in the Stileses’ marriage. Five thousand dollars has inexplicably appeared in the bank account Vangie shares with her scam-artist husband, Arthur, and she smells trouble. So does Reina. Especially when her investigation into Arthur’s likely new con leads to murder. Considering the manner of death and the signs on the victim’s body, Reina recognizes it for what it is: ritual magic of the vodouisant kind.

As Reina digs deeper, she encounters a conspiracy exploiting vulnerable youth—one of whom may have abilities just like hers. With the help of her friends Darryl and Tyka, Reina must hone her ever-evolving skills to uncover a mystery that reaches further than she imagined.

True love requires a little research and development in a funny, heart-racing romance by Sariah Wilson, the bestselling author of The Paid Bridesmaid.

How can Anna Ellis, a geeky, brilliant, and hopelessly smitten cosmetic chemist possibly win over Craig Kimball, the man of her dreams—who also happens to be her boss? The answer is Craig’s empathetic (and handsome) CEO half brother, Marco. The makeup mogul knows Craig for the ridiculously competitive rival he is. Whatever Marco has, Craig wants. That can be Anna, if she’s game to play.

All Anna and Marco have to do is pretend they’re falling in love and let the rumors begin. If the experiment in attraction works, a jealous Craig will swoop in and give Anna her happily ever after—if it weren’t for one hitch in the plan. There’s more to Marco than meets the eye. With every fake date, Anna’s feelings are starting to become dizzyingly real.

Blame it on chemistry. It’s unpredictable, exciting, and occasionally combustible. If Anna and Marco are really falling in love, who are they to argue with science?

Review:

Quirky, adorable, and addictive!

The Chemistry of Love is a sweet, humorous, steamy tale featuring the creative, talented cosmetic chemist Anna and the hardworking, considerate CEO Marco as they discover quite quickly that there may be a lot more to their relationship than just convenience, pretence, deals, and fake feelings.

The writing is amusing and sweet. The characters are charismatic, supportive, and endearing. And the plot is an enchanting tale bursting with witty banter, shameless flirting, red-hot chemistry, tender moments, self-discovery, family, friendship, kindness, light drama, and unconditional love.

Overall, The Chemistry of Love is another delightful, engaging, highly entertaining tale by Wilson that has everything I look for in a lighthearted rom-com and more. I loved the characters, I loved the meet cute, I loved the storyline, and I loved the happy-ever-after ending.

From Emma Barry comes a clever romance about a hot veterinarian and a chicken-loving influencer who can’t help but ruffle each other’s feathers.

Nicole Jones needs a fresh start. “Chick Nic” to millions of internet fans, the social media star and her flock of chickens bask in the spotlight—until she’s publicly dumped by a YouTuber for clout. She has no choice but to round up her birds and move on.

But when one of her hens has an emergency, Nic gets her first taste of her new stomping grounds—and it isn’t good. Veterinarian Will Lund is wildly attractive, yes, but he’s also surly. In fact, he comes right out and calls her a menace for parading her chickens on social media.

As neighbors, Nic and Will can’t exactly avoid each other. Then again, maybe they don’t want to. The two can’t deny their smoldering attraction, and it isn’t long before late-night confessions lead to backyard shenanigans.

Is this the start of a neighborly relationship—or could something more be hatching?

Review:

Engaging, heartfelt, and fun!

Chick Magnet is a spirited, heartwarming, enemies-to-lovers romance that features the successful influencer Nicole who, after having her heart shattered live on YouTube, is hoping that a move to her late grandmother’s hometown of Yagerstown will be the perfect place for her and her famous chickens to settle down and create a new life, and the grumpy, passionate veterinarian Will who’s determined to do whatever it takes to keep the doors of his practice open after the closures and restrictions of COVID have left him all but financially ruined.

The prose is amusing and light. The characters, including all the supporting characters, are quirky, supportive, and kind. And the plot is a fun-loving, flirty blend of tricky situations, tender moments, humorous mishaps, self-discovery, friendship, family, kindness, depression, support, happiness, romance, and a flock of chickens with large personalities.

Overall, Chick Magnet is a charming, humourous, enjoyable treat by Barry that is a delight to read and ultimately reminds us that true love is always worth the fight.

Lizzie has made endless mistakes. Kitchen fires, pyramid schemes, bangs (of the hair and human variety), you name it, she’s done it… and made a mess of it too. One mistake she’s never made is letting anyone get closer to her than a single hook-up. But after losing yet another bakery job due to her uncontrolled ADHD, she breaks her cardinal rule and has a two-night-stand that changes everything.

Once burned, twice shy, Rake has given up on relationships. And feelings. And any form of intimacy for that matter. Yet something about charming, chaotic Lizzie has him lowering his guard. For two nights, that is. Then it’s back home to Australia and far away from the pesky feelings Lizzie pulls from him. But when Lizzie tells him she’s got an unexpected bun in the oven, he’ll do whatever it takes to be a part of his child’s life… except be emotionally vulnerable, obviously. He’s never going to make that mistake again.

Through a series of mishaps, totally “platonic” single bed sharing, and an underground erotic baking scheme, Lizzie and Rake learn that even the biggest mistakes can have the most beautiful consequences.

Review:

Engaging, heartfelt, and sweet!

Lizzie Blake’s Best Mistake is a quick, uplifting, flirty tale featuring the absentminded, quirky Lizzie and the handsome, loyal Rake as they navigate a relationship that includes a two-night stand, an unexpected pregnancy, undeniable chemistry, romantic moments, a relocation to live as co-parents, and an attraction that is extremely hard to keep platonic.

The writing is tender and smooth. The characters are charismatic, supportive, and endearing. And the plot is an irresistible blend of friendship, family, tricky situations, neurodiversity, spirited shenanigans, awkward interactions, light drama, and unconditional love.

Overall, Lizzie Blake’s Best Mistake is a refreshing, optimistic, delightful tale by Eddings with characters I couldn’t help but fall in love with, a storyline that kept me engaged from start to finish, and a happy-ever-after ending that made me swoon and wish for more.

About Jo McNally

Jo McNally lives in coastal North Carolina with 100 pounds of dog and 200 pounds of husband – her slice of the bed is very small. When she's not writing or reading romance novels (or clinging to the edge of the bed...), she can often be found on the back porch sipping wine with friends, listening to great music. If the weather is absolutely perfect, she'll occasionally join her husband on the golf course, where she always feels far more competitive than her actual skill-level would suggest.

What could come between a nanny and an earl in a fairy-tale love story? A reality check—in an endearing and witty romance by Sariah Wilson, the bestselling author of Roommaid.

With her sister’s medical bills mounting, Diana Parker can’t say no to a high-paying opportunity like this: accompany a wealthy couple to Aspen and nanny their precocious five-year-old son for three months. Necessary qualifications? She must know how to ski and teach math, speak fluent French, excel at social graces, and hold a master’s degree in childhood development. Who’ll be the wiser that Diana’s only skill is packing for Colorado?

So far, so good—having a con woman for a mother has turned out to be a benefit, even if Diana has complicated feelings about telling lies. But she’s doing this for her sister. And the perks—like a ticket to a lavish charity fundraiser, a new gown, and a Prince Charming–adjacent earl named Griffin Windsor—are pretty irresistible. Diana can’t deny the Cinderella vibe.

Wary of gold diggers and scandal, England’s most eligible bachelor is nevertheless falling for Diana, and sweeping the not-quite princess off her feet.

The warmer their relationship becomes, the slipperier the slopes are for Diana. Sooner or later, she’ll have to come clean. When that happens, does an honest-to-goodness happy ending stand a chance?

Review:

Lighthearted, charming, and fun!

Cinder-Nanny is a delightful, character-driven rom-com set in the idyllic mountains of Colorado that introduces you to the determined, complicated Diana and the charismatic, persistent Griffin as they each discover the power of friendship, the pull of attraction, and the inescapable euphoria of falling in love.

The prose is whimsical and witty. The characters are multilayered, kind, and endearing. And the plot is an amusing blend of life, love, introspection, friendship, family, secrets, embarrassing moments, awkward situations, misunderstandings, taking chances, and finding the one.

Overall, Cinder-Nanny is a well written, refreshing, addictive modern-day Cinderella story with irresistible characters that I devoured in one sitting. I absolutely adored this novel and remain, as always, one of Sariah Wilson’s biggest fans.

Boiled peanuts, lovebugs, and murder.

Lies from the past and a dangerous present collide when, after fifteen years in exile, Michelle Miller returns to her tiny hometown of Lorida, Florida. With her mother in the hospital, she’s forced to reckon with the broken relationships she left behind: with her family, with friends, and with herself.

As a teenager, Michelle felt isolated and invisible until she met Sissy, a dynamic and wealthy classmate. Their sudden, intense friendship was all-consuming. Punk rocker Morrison later joins their clique, and they become an inseparable trio. They were the perfect high school friends, bound by dysfunction, bad TV, and boredom—until one of them ends up dead.

Confronting the death of her best friend requires Michelle to face her past if she is going to survive. But what if everything she remembers is a lie? Or just as dangerous: What if it isn’t?

An ingenious debut from editor and publisher Davida Breier, Sinkhole is a mesmerizing, darkly comic coming-of-age thriller immersed in 1980s central Florida. A disturbing and skillful exploration of home, friendship, selfhood, and grief set amidst golf courses, mobile homes, and alligators.

Review:

Raw, sinister, and consuming!

Sinkhole is a simmering, character-driven novel that transports you into the life of Michelle Miller who, after fifteen years away, reluctantly heads home to Lorida, Florida, knowing that the past will inevitably collide with the present, long-buried secrets will undoubtedly be unearthed, and a life littered with dysfunction, lies and insecurities will finally be confronted.

The writing is emotive and tight. The characters are flawed, vulnerable, and conflicted. And the plot is an immersive, coming-of-age tale about life, loss, deception, desperation, friendship, familial drama, manipulation, jealousy, obsession, cruelty, callousness, social inequality, and emerging sexuality.

Overall, Sinkhole is an astute, tragic, gritty tale by Breier that does a remarkable job of delving into the complex dynamics between friends and family and highlights just how parasitic and toxic some of those relationships can truly be.

Mariella Jacob was one of the world’s premier bridal designers, but one viral PR disaster later, she’s trying to get her torpedoed career back on track in small-town Magnolia, North Carolina. Until that mistake—in the glowering, handsome form of Alex Ralsten—moves to Magnolia too.

Mariella ruined Alex’s wedding by announcing that his starlet bride-to-be was sleeping with Mariella’s fiancé. In fact, though Alex keeps reminding himself that they’re enemies, something deeper is growing…daring them to admit that a rocky past might lead to something unexpectedly wonderful.

Review:

Quaint, hopeful, and absorbing!

Lee Stone is a twenty-first-century woman: she kicks butt at her job as a communications director at a women-run electric car company (that’s better than Tesla, thank you) and after work she is “Stoner,” drinking guys under the table and never letting any of them get too comfortable in her bed…

That’s because Lee’s learned one big lesson: never trust love. After four major heartbreaks set her straight, from her father cheating on her mom all the way to Ben Laderman in grad school—who wasn’t actually cheating, but she could have sworn he was, so she reciprocated in kind.

Then Ben shows up five years later, working as a policy expert for the most liberal governor in Texas history, just as Lee is trying to get a clean energy bill rolling. Things get complicated—and competitive as Lee and Ben are forced to work together. Tension builds just as old sparks reignite, fanning the flames for a romantic dustup the size of Texas.

Review:

Sassy, seductive, and fun!

Fool Me Once is a playful, second-chance romance that features the fiery, intelligent Lee, who is content to be single and completely focused on her career and having a good time, and the competitive, hard-bodied Ben, who has landed the job of his dreams although it, unfortunately, involves working side-by-side with the one woman who shattered his heart fives years ago and who he’s never been quite able to forget.

The writing is witty and smooth. The characters are amusing, charismatic, and endearing. And the plot is a push-pull tale filled with workplace drama, tricky situations, tender moments, flirty banter, blistering chemistry, goals, expectations, family, friendship, and steamy romance.

Overall, Fool Me Once is a sweet, humorous, passionate read by Winstead with characters you can’t help but fall in love with and a happy-ever-after ending that will make you swoon.

From Sariah Wilson, the bestselling author of Roommaid, comes a captivating romantic comedy about what happens when a wedding party mixes business with romance.

Rachel Vinson is a bridesmaid for hire: part confidante, part wedding planner, and one hundred percent pretend BFF. Discretion guaranteed. Her next gig is a destination wedding—livestreamed and sponsored—for an Instagram influencer. That means a paradise of new contacts, which could be a boon to her already booming business. If Rachel can keep the very handsome and slightly too interested best man at bay, that is.

High-tech entrepreneur Camden Lewis must know: Who is this gorgeous, intelligent, and mysterious woman? Too good to be real. Convinced she’s a corporate spy out to tank his company, Camden’s not letting her out of his sight. But the constant surveillance is also opening his eyes to things about Rachel that he likes. If she’s a spy, she’s certainly the cutest one he’s ever seen.

As the week’s worth of wedding events march along, Rachel and Camden are learning almost everything there is to know about each other. Rachel’s made a career out of always a bridesmaid…but perhaps there’s a chance for her own trip down the aisle?

Review:

Cute, witty, and delightfully romantic!

The Paid Bridesmaid is an amusing, absorbing tale set on one of the beautiful islands of Hawaii that introduces you to the intelligent, spunky Rachel and the intense, sceptical Camden as they discover firsthand the power of attraction and just how tempting the other people in the wedding party can truly be.

The writing is amusing and sweet. The characters are charismatic, supportive, and endearing. And the plot is an irresistible blend of shameless flirting, friendship, tricky situations, spirited shenanigans, family, light drama, awkward moments, steamy romance, and the hilarious ups and downs of destination weddings.

Overall, The Paid Bridesmaid is a humorous, swoony, engaging read by Wilson that had the perfect storyline for my rom-com loving heart, gave me a new book boyfriend in Camden Lewis, and introduced me to an amazing cast of secondary characters that I can only hope will someday get a book of their own.
