Review:

Creepy, suspenseful, and incredibly entertaining!

This is a psychological thrill ride of secrets, deception, infidelity, and murder, and raises the question “how well do you really know someone?”

The writing is well done.  The characters are complex, secretive, and fascinating. And the plot continually keeps you guessing with its multiple twists and turns, tension, mystery, and ever-expanding suspect list.

Overall, I enjoyed this novel. It was engrossing, intriguing, and had me contemplating and deducing whodunit from the very outset.

Extraordinarily intense, exceptionally sinister, and darkly entertaining!

This story reminds us just how much our familial relationships, environments and experiences can affect our physical and psychological health and emphasizes how fragile and complex our minds truly are. 

It, ultimately, is a story about abuse, loss, death, grief, guilt, manipulation, and obsession.

The plot is told from different points of view and shifts between the past and present effortlessly creating an exciting thrill ride of twists, turns, suspense, and tension. The writing is smooth and clear. And the characters are lonely, damaged, desolate, and devious.

Overall, this is an incredibly clever, debut psychological thriller with just the right amount of mystery and eeriness to keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish.

After years of trying to get published and never getting further than the slush pile, I went back to university at the age of 40 where I gained a first-class honours degree in English & Creative Writing and an MA in Creative Writing with distinction.

Although I also worked full-time during the five years I studied at university, the courses gave me the time and space to try different writing and increased my confidence and belief in my writing. Before I graduated from my MA, I had secured representation with my agent, Clare Wallace, at the Darley Anderson Literacy, TV and Film Agency and had my first book deal.

My first adult psychological thriller for Bookouture, ‘Safe with Me’, actually started life as my dissertation on my English & Creative Writing degree in 2010.

Review:

Clever, intriguing, and highly suspenseful!

This is a faced-paced thriller about greed, power, murder, and corruption that definitely brings to mind the idea that ‘money is the root of all evil’.

The characters, especially Lewis, are tenacious, resilient, entertaining, and charismatic. The story is well written. And the plot is a good mix of character-driven drama and multiple twists and turns that keep you thoroughly engaged and captivated from start to finish.

I have to say this was a really enjoyable, exciting read and I highly recommend it.

Brilliantly plotted, incredibly captivating, and definitely a must-read of 2016!

This is an intriguing thriller that explores the psychological devastation caused by a missing child and the resulting fragility and dynamics between family members, the police, and the community at large. 

The writing is spot on. The characters are tenacious, intelligent, and multi-layered. And the plot is a suspenseful rollercoaster ride of murder, deception, secrets and deviance.

I have to say that in a time when mysteries seem to be churned out by the dozen and storylines seem to be getting rote, predictable, and a little lacklustre, Robert Bryndza is like a breath of fresh air. He creates characters we can’t get enough of and juicy, complex stories that suck you in and make you feel like you’re not only an observer but a participant. He truly writes with great depth and heart, and leaves you, as a reader, surprised, highly entertained, and extremely satisfied.

If you haven’t read any of the previous novels in the “Detective Erika Foster” series, your really should. You can check out my review for “The Night Stalker” (Erika Foster #2) HERE.

Racked by guilt over his accidental killing of a young Italian girl, contract killer André Warner has effectively retired himself from his ‘profession’ and taken to drink and other palliatives, while sinking slowly into a mire of depression.

A contract in Tangier to assassinate an Arab drug trafficker lures him out of retirement and self-pity. Soon after his arrival he encounters attractive American widow, Clair Power, and her precocious sixteen year-old daughter, Lizzy, who bears such a striking resemblance to the girl Warner killed that his waning anguish is instantly rekindled. He attempts to assuage it by embarking on a fling with Clair which brings him into conflict with a mysterious Dutchman named Rik de Bruin, who also appears to have designs on her.

Review:

Incredibly disturbing, faced-paced, and highly suspenseful!

This a dark and gritty thriller full of murder, power, violence, drug abuse, child pornography, manipulation, dominance, corruption, and sexual exploitation.

The writing, itself, is well done, well plotted, and exceptionally shocking, chilling, and creepy. However, I found the characters really hard to like. The main character, André, is a hitman with loose morals and very few redeeming qualities, and the supporting characters are dangerous, vulnerable, and cunning.

Overall, this story is not for the squeamish, but if you like seedy, macabre page turners this is definitely the novel for you.

Intelligent, spine-chilling, and incredibly eerie!

Once again, in this second book in the series, we are taken on a journey into the dark and sinister sect, known as “The Light”, and are immersed into a world full of deviance, violence, exploitation, dominance, and manipulation. 

The prose is clear, exact and vivid. The characters are intriguing, complicated, and resilient.  And the plot is exceptionally executed with the perfect mix of twists, turns, and emotion.

This is a story that will not only captivate and ensnare you from the very first page, but will also have you on the edge of your seat until the very end.

As mentioned, this is the sequel to the novel “Into the Light”, and therefore I would highly recommend you read it prior to reading this one. If you haven’t had a chance to read my review for Into the Light, you can check it out Here.

Chilling, haunting, and deeply moving!

This is a gripping novel that demonstrates the enduring mental and emotional anguish that can be caused by friendship, familial dynamics, loss, guilt, grief, jealousy, and loneliness, and emphasizes the importance of closure and forgiveness.

The prose is beautiful and clear. The characters are consumed, damaged, troubled, and real. The setting is vividly described, with the island of Orkney being a character itself with its dreariness and isolation. And the plot is meticulous, clever, mysterious, melancholic, and exceptionally riveting.

This truly is a gripping, thought-provoking, emotional novel that is incredibly captivating and intriguing from the very start. It would definitely be a wonderful addition to book clubs everywhere and I highly recommend it.

Review:

Dark, engrossing, and chillingly deviant!

This is a character-driven psychological thriller that emphasizes the dangers and risks involved with mixing and mingling with the criminal underworld.

The main character, Genevieve, is lost, lonely, and naive. And the supporting characters are seedy, complex, and ruthless.

The story is told in first-person narration and uses a past/present style to give insight and context into the precarious situations developing and unfolding.

The writing is well done. And although the plot in the first half of the novel is a little slow, the second half is definitely more compelling, intriguing, and full of tension.

Overall, this story is not action-packed or extremely fast-paced, but it is still a captivating read.

Review:

Humorous, charming, and suspenseful.

This is a quick, easy read full of familial dysfunction, love entanglements, secrets, lies, greed, and murder.

The plot develops nicely and is full of suspects, clues, mishaps and mayhem. The setting is the quaint villages and towns found in the English countryside, complete with local pubs and manor homes. And the usual cast of flawed, multi-layered characters are back for another round of detection and investigation.

This is the twenty-seventh book in the Agatha Raisin series, and even though it can be read as a standalone novel, you may want to read some of the earlier books in the series to fully appreciate some of the continuing storylines and character development.

Intensely riveting, spine-chilling, and highly suspenseful!

This is a gripping thriller that illustrates the psychological and emotional anguish of obsession, manipulation, selfishness, lies, and deception.

The prose is clear and precise. The characterization is well developed, with the main character, Cadence, being confused, resilient, and empathetic, while Richard is intense, moody, and conniving. And the story is written in a nice, past/present style that allows insight and depth into both the relationship between the characters, as well as their individual drives, wants and motivations.

This is a well written, tension-filled, debut novel full of twists, turns, violence, mayhem, and murder that will entertain you from the very first page.

About Laura Lovett

Laura (Hambley) Lovett was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta, and received her PhD in Psychology from the University of Calgary in 2006. Her love of writing began at an early age when she would create and draw characters, telling stories to herself as she drew.

An accomplished author in the academic and business world, Laura pursued her love of creative writing to pen her first novel, Losing Cadence, a psychological thriller. Losing Cadence was written over many years as Laura juggled school, work and family, but she made time to pursue her passion for writing.

Laura is a psychologist and entrepreneur, currently running practices in the areas of career and leadership development and distributed workplaces. She was nominated and selected as a Distinctive Woman in Canada in 2013. Laura also enjoys teaching at the University of Calgary and has been an Adjunct Professor of Psychology since 2010.

Laura lives in Calgary with her husband and three children. She loves playing squash, travelling, spending time at the family cabin in Montana, as well as her view of the Rocky Mountains as the snow is falling on her hot tub.
