Fiona McTavish is an engineer, a chemist, a rebel—and no one’s idea of a proper lady. She prefers breeches to ballrooms, but her new invention—matches—will surely turn as many heads. There’s just a little matter of her being arrested for a crime she didn’t commit. And the only person she can turn to for help is the man who broke her heart years ago.

Edward Stirling, Duke of Wildeforde, will do anything to restore his family’s name and put his father’s scandalous death behind them. But when Fiona needs his help getting released from prison, he can’t deny her—even though it means she must live with him as a condition of her freedom. With the desire between them rekindling as fast as the gossip about their arrangement is spreading among the ton, Edward will have to choose what matters most to him—his reputation or his heart.

Review:

Enticing, passionate, and amusing!

How to Deceive a Duke is set in London during the early eighteenth century and features the feisty, intelligent Fiona McTavish who, after being arrested and conditionally released, must live for a month under the same roof as the one man she hoped to never see again after he professed his love and then broke her heart five years ago, the devilishly handsome Edward Stirling, Duke of Wildforde.

The prose is passionate and alluring. The characters are fiery, stubborn, and loyal. And the plot is a delightfully scandalous blend of familial drama, societal expectations, regency traditions, friendship, desire, yearning, gossip, tricky situations, duty, and palpable attraction.

Overall, How to Deceive a Duke is a steamy, engaging, highly entertaining tale that I absolutely adored. It is the second title in the Rebel with a Cause series by Parish that, in my opinion, keeps getting better and better and is one I definitely wouldn’t want to miss.

He holds her fate in his hands—she holds his heart in hers.

Rafe Davies might seem like just another charismatic rake, but in reality, he is one of the crown’s most valuable agents. As relentless as he is reckless, Rafe has never come upon a mission he couldn’t complete. But when he encounters the intriguing-yet-prickly lady’s companion Miss Sylvia Sparrow while on assignment at a Scottish house party, he finds himself thoroughly distracted by the secretive beauty.

Though most women would be thrilled to catch the eye of a tall, dark, and dangerously handsome man, Sylvia is through with that sort of adventure. She trusted the wrong man once and paid for it dearly. The fiery bluestocking is resolved to avoid Rafe, until a chance encounter between them reveals the normally irreverent man’s unexpected depths—and an attraction that’s impossible to ignore. But when Sylvia begins to suspect she isn’t the only one harboring a few secrets, she realizes that Rafe may pose a risk to far more than her heart . . .

Light, captivating, and entertaining!

The Rebel and the Rake is a mysterious, engaging tale set in Scotland during 1897 that features the sassy, distrustful Sylvia Sparrow who, after being disgraced and left brokenhearted because of her progressive thinking in the past, reluctantly finds herself in need of a little help from the one man, the debonair son of an Earl and spy for the crown, Rafe Davies who seems to be hiding more than one secret of his own.

The prose is fluid and light. The characters are charming, passionate, and endearing. And the plot is an engaging mix of societal expectations, tricky situations, scheming behaviour, friendship, desire, deception, scandal, subterfuge, tender moments, witty banter, chemistry, and romance.

Overall, The Rebel and the Rake is an enticing, amusing, delightful read by Sullivan that is the second novel in the League of Scoundrels series, that in my opinion, shouldn’t be missed.

First love gets a second chance when a mischievous dog finds a way to keep fetching the town librarian’s high school sweetheart in this charming small-town romance.

The last person librarian Elinor Rodriguez wants to spend time with is her first love, Levi Jackson, but it seems her mischievous rescue dog has other ideas. Without fail, Dory slips from the house whenever Elinor’s back is turned. And in Pine Hollow, calls about a dog herding cars on Main Street go straight to Levi. The quietly intense lawman broke Elinor’s heart once, and now she’s determined to move on, no matter how much she misses him.

As the kid who barely graduated—and still struggles to hide his dyslexia—Levi always believed that Elinor was way out of his league. Even though he ended their engagement all those years ago, Elinor still takes Levi’s breath away whenever he sees her. But with a little help from a four-legged friend, Levi and Elinor may just get the second chance they deserve.

Includes the bonus novella I’ll Be Home for Christmas by Hope Ramsay!

Review:

Sincere, charming, and fun!

To All the Dogs I’ve Loved Before is a heartwarming, rewarding tale featuring the intelligent, sensible Elinor and the stubborn, reliable Levi as they discover that the heart wants who the heart wants, and some things are definitely worth a second chance.

The prose is fluid and smooth. The characters are warm, dependable, and funny. And the plot is a delightful mix of life, love, family, friendship, small-town living, adventurous endeavours, nostalgic moments, romance, and a lovable, four-legged rascal named Dory.

To All the Dogs I’ve Loved Before is the third title in a series that, for me, just keeps getting better and better. It’s a sweet, playful, amusing read by Shane with characters I couldn’t help but root for and a swoon-worthy ending that left me smitten, satisfied, and hoping for more!

Gilmore Girls meets My Big Fat Greek Wedding in this humorous, multi-generational story about a mother and daughter who discover that life happens when you least expect it.

Gabi Bloom doesn’t believe in signs. She believes in photographic evidence, the view through her camera lens, and the snap of the shutter. It’s why she traveled to Europe—to satisfy her wanderlust and to kick off her photography career. But in Ireland, all of that changed when Gabi gazed into the impossibly blue eyes of an American bartender. She wasn’t prepared for their intense and immediate attraction, or the fact that she’d be bringing Ethan home with her . . . as her fiancé.

Gabi’s upcoming marriage is the cherry on top of her mother’s current predicament. Stumbling toward forty, Alissa is a pastry chef who raised her daughter single-handedly while Gabi’s father traveled the globe. Now her baby girl is getting married after a whirlwind romance and Alissa—well, Alissa is pregnant. Again. And not only is her ex the father, he wants her back. For good. Until she can figure out that part of the puzzle, Alissa is hiding her big little secret even as she helps Gabi plan a happily-ever-after wedding. But somewhere between disaster and hope, life might just bloom in a way that is breathtakingly unexpected . . .

Review:

Heartwarming, moving, and sweet!

The Bloom Girls is an intimate, sentimental tale that sweeps you into the lives of the Bloom family, Gabi, Alissa, and Matthew, as they confront the past, accept the things they cannot change, take chances, repair relationships, and embrace the future.

The prose is genuine and smooth. The characters are hesitant, supportive, and compassionate. And the plot is a tender tale about life, love, forgiveness, responsibilities, familial drama, parenthood, friendship, hope, second chances, and new beginnings.

Overall, I found The Bloom Girls to be a nostalgic, uplifting, charming tale by Pine, complete with strong female characters, a heartfelt storyline, and an insightful look into the complex ties that bind us as family.

That is, until Juno decides to play matchmaker. Her efforts finally bring Pepper into his arms, but they expose the danger Pepper is in. To protect Pepper and Juno, Auggie will have to live up to his last name and prove happy endings aren’t just for fairy tales.

Review:

Provocative, sassy, and fun!

Dream Keeper is a steamy, engaging tale that features dancer and single mom, Pepper Hannigan who happens to be next up on Lottie’s setup list, but between her religiously consumed extended family, her poor past history with faithful men, and always putting her daughter’s wellbeing first she’s a little hesitant to give the handsome, commando Augustus Hero a real shot at her heart.

The writing is seductive and sweet. The characters are protective, supportive, and committed. And the plot is an alluring mix of friendship, family, drama, sisterhood, danger, palpable attraction, sizzling tension, and sweet romance.

Overall, Dream Keeper is another touching, spicy, exciting addition to a series that is not only seductive, enticing, and exceptionally entertaining, but one I definitely can’t get enough of.

About Kristen Ashley

Kristen Ashley was born in Gary, Indiana, USA. She nearly killed her mother and herself making it into the world, seeing as she had the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck (already attempting to accessorise and she hadn't taken her first breath!).

Kristen grew up in Brownsburg, Indiana but has lived in Denver, Colorado and the West Country of England. Thus she has been blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Her posse is loopy (to say the least) but loopy is good when you want to write.

Kristen was raised in a house with a large and multi-generational family. They lived on a very small farm in a small town in the heartland and existed amongst the strains of Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers, REO Speedwagon and Whitesnake (and the wardrobes that matched).

Needless to say, growing up in a house full of music, clothes and love was a good way to grow up.

And as she keeps growing up, it keeps getting better.

Two women uncover the secrets of the past in this emotional and poignant story that’s perfect for fans of Lisa Wingate and Kristina McMorris.

1934: Connie Burroughs loves living in the orphanage that her father runs in the English countryside. Exploring its nooks and crannies with her sister, hearing the pounding of a hundred pairs of feet on the wooden stairs, having a father who is doing so much good. But everything changes the day she sees him carrying a newborn baby that he says he found near the broken front gate. A baby she recognizes . . .

Present Day: Arriving at her father’s beloved cottage beside the Thames, Sarah Jennings is hoping for peace and quiet, and an escape from her difficult divorce. But when she finds her father unwell and poring over boxes of files on the orphanage where he was abandoned as a child, she decides to investigate his elusive past herself.

The only person left alive who lived at Cedar Hall when Sarah’s father was there is Connie Burroughs, but Connie sits quietly in her nursing home for a reason. The sewing box under Connie’s bed hides secrets that will change Sarah’s life forever, uncovering a connection between the two women that has darker consequences than she could ever imagine.

A heartbreaking and ultimately uplifting tale inspired by the lives of the children who lived at the author’s great-grandfather’s orphanage

Review:

Pensive, tense, and emotive!

The Orphan House is an engaging, mysterious tale that sweeps you away to the idyllic village of Weirfield and immerses you into the lives of two main characters, Sarah Jennings, a young woman who, after heading to her father’s home to regroup after her marriage falls apart, finds herself taking care of her father, purchasing a historic home, and endeavouring to rebuild a new life in a house that needs a lot of work and seems to contain a lot of hidden surprises; and Connie Burroughs, an elderly woman who, after a recent fall and subsequent move to an assisted-living facility, decides to let the memories she’s been protecting and her father’s long-buried secrets finally come to light.

The prose is evocative and expressive. The characters are focused, troubled, and attentive. And the plot, set in both the 1930s as well as present-day, is a tender, heartfelt mix of life, love, family, friendship, self-reflection, history, abuse, power, negligence, community, new beginnings, and second chances.

Overall, The Orphan House is a hopeful, absorbing, reflective tale by Bennett that, with its compelling storyline and endearing characters, I’m sure glad I didn’t miss.

Former lovers become reluctant allies in this delightfully witty historical rom-com from the bestselling author of A Lady’s Guide to Mischief and Mayhem—for fans of Evie Dunmore, Enola Holmes, and Netflix’s Bridgerton!

England, 1867 : As half of the writing duo behind England’s most infamous crime column, Miss Caroline Hardcastle has quite the scandalous reputation. It may have cost her a fiancé, but she would much rather bring attention to crimes against those ignored by society than worry about what the ton thinks of her.

After Caro’s dear friend is kidnapped, however, she has no choice but to work with Lord Valentine Thorn, the same man who broke her heart. Worse, when her actions put her father’s business at risk, a marriage of convenience may be her only solution . . . but can she trust Val to stand by her? Or will their past repeat itself?

Val–the new Viscount Wrackham–is in an untenable position: His father is demanding he find a respectable bride to secure the succession. Yet the only woman he’s ever loved, Miss Caroline Hardcastle, is notorious for behaving improperly. And she’s never forgiven him for his youthful transgressions, missteps made in the name of familial duty, but ones he still regrets to this day.

As they grow closer to unmasking the culprit, Val sees an opportunity to show Caro he’s a changed man. But can he convince her to give their love a second chance–before death does them part?

Review:

Quirky, adventurous, and fun!

An Heiress’s Guide to Deception and Desire is a playful, engaging tale set in London during 1867 that takes you into the life of Miss Caroline Hardcastle, a crime columnist who, after one of her closest friends goes missing, must grudgingly team up with he ex-fiancé and one man who broke her heart, the dashingly handsome, Lord Valentine Thorn in order to solve the case and rescue her dear friend, Effie as quickly as possible.

The writing is cheeky and engaging. The characters are resourceful, clever, and endearing. And the plot is a passionate, compelling tale full of family, friendship, societal expectations, deductive reasoning, scheming behaviour, tricky situations, awkward moments, secrets, attraction, desire, sleuthing, and of course, a little romance.

An Heiress’s Guide to Deception and Desire is an amusing, lighthearted, entertaining tale that I thoroughly enjoyed. It is the second title in the A Lady’s Guide series by Collins, that if you ask me, keeps getting better and better.

She hates that she needs a man’s help—so she’s delighted to discover the clever, charming baron at her side is in fact a woman. Her cold heart . . . did it just pitter-patter?

Review:

Captivating, mysterious, and seductive!

The Perks of Loving a Wallflower is an enticing, passionate tale that takes you back to London during 1817 and into the life of Thomasina Wynchester, a young lady with many faces who is bound and determined while helping her family solve the mystery involving the wartime cipher to finally introduce her true self to the bluestocking she yearns for, the lovely Miss Philippa York.

The prose is witty and sweet. The characters are strong-willed, determined, and resourceful. And the plot is an arousing combination of friendship, family, secrets, determination, action, adventure, societal expectations, desire, acceptance, tender moments, and unconditional love.

Overall, The Perks of Loving a Wallflower is a charming, seductive, heartwarming romp by Ridley that does a fabulous job of taking the historical romance genre and spicing it up with a little gender-bending, some sapphic love, a touch of mystery, and such a unique and intriguing cast you can’t help but cheer them on. I was once again lucky enough to not only read this novel but also listen to the audio, and I have to say if you get a chance, give this one a listen as Moira Quirk, the narrator, does an incredible job of bringing not only this story but these characters to life.

But when a charming stranger steps in to protect Annie from a sudden threat, both her rules fly out the door. Because Annie’s mystery hero . . . is a Merrick.

Against his family’s objections, Jonah insists Annie hide out with him at his ranch while they try to outwit a dangerous pursuer. But as the days turn into weeks, Jonah realizes he’ll stop anyone who tries to harm Annie . . . or the loving future they’re building together.

Review:

Suspenseful, appealing, and sweet!

Meant to Be My Cowboy is a warm, lighthearted tale that takes you back to Devil’s Door, Wyoming, and into the lives of Annie Dempsey, a young woman on the run from her dangerous ex who isn’t content to just let her flee with all his secrets, and the reliable, attentive, Jonah Merrick who’s willing to do whatever it takes to protect this newcomer who has stolen his heart even if she is a member of the detested Dempsey family.

The prose is crisp and tight. The characters are intriguing, multilayered, and persistent. And the plot is an enticing mix of family, friendship, danger, drama, instant attraction, sizzling chemistry, smouldering tension, and delicious heat.

Overall, Meant to Be My Cowboy is a passionate, sinister, entertaining tale by Ryan that has all the elements you look for in a western, romantic suspense novel, and even though it’s the third book in the Wranglers of Wyoming series, it is more than enjoyable as a standalone novel.

Cosy, spirited, and heartwarming!

The Christmas Village is a quaint, beguiling tale featuring the hardworking, ruggedly handsome Deputy Miles Bruno who broke his high school girlfriend’s heart ten years ago when he suddenly cancelled their engagement and dumped her out of the blue, and the loyal, caring Lucy Hannigan who, after inheriting her late mother’s house and bills, may finally have to put her heartache aside and allow the one man she’s never quite forgotten back into her home and heart.

The prose is charming and light. The characters are lonely, thoughtful, and friendly. And the plot is an enchanting tale full of tender moments, friendship, family, community, self-discovery, merry preparations, furry companions, and a touch of romance!

Overall, The Christmas Village is a clean, festive, uplifting, wintery treat by Rains that is a wonderful addition to the Somerset Lake series and is sure to have you believing in the magic of Christmas and daydreaming of snowflakes, twinkling lights, decorated trees, and scrumptious chocolatey treats.
